Earthquake and Volcanoes Project
The following is a list of several parts to this project.
The due date for each part will be given to you by your teacher.
Make sure you follow the requirements for each part as directed on this
sheet. Time to move on and explore the exciting world of volcanoes
and earthquakes!!
Earthquakes
Part I: Locating the
Epicenter
For this part you will be determining
the location of an epicenter and magnitude of an earthquake.
Requirements:
* Type and essay that tells
describes what an earthquake is, what seismic waves are, what the difference
between the focus and epicenter is, how and epicenter is found, and how
the magnitude is found.
* Go to the Virtual
Earthquake, complete the activities and print a certificate.
Part II: Extent of Damage
For this part you will be exploring
the factors that influence the extent of the damage caused by an earthquake.
Requirements:
Make a visual representation of the 8 factors that influence the amount
of damage. Go to The
Ground Beneath and explore to find the information you need.
Be creative in your visual representations, they don't have to just be
drawn.
Part III: Earthquakes
in History
For this part you will find out about
an earthquake that has happened.
Requirements:
* Go to the team curriculum
links page and find information about an earthquake.
* Write notes and give a
2 minute presentation about your earthquake.
Volcanoes
By clicking on the volcano
links you will be taken to the top 10 volcano web sites. Use
this site and the team curriculum
links site for any part of the assignment.
Part IV : Spreadsheet
Volcanoes occur all over the world on all 7 continents.
For this part you become a world traveler viewing volcanoes from every
region of the earth. Volcano World will help you gather the information
necessary to complete the requirements for this part of the project.
Requirements:
Create a spreadsheet with the following
column titles:
Volcano name
Continent
Latitude Longitude
Elevation Last Erupted
Mt. St. Helens
North America 46.2 N
122.2 W 8363 ft
May, 1980
* Your chart needs to contain 25 volcano names with
each of the 7 continents represented. Click on Volcano
World and get started.
Part V: World Map
The earth's crust is like a giant jigsaw puzzle broken into
many large pieces known as plates. The plate boundaries are where
most volcanoes and earthquakes occur.
Requirements:
Trace a world map onto a large piece of tag board and perform the following
tasks:
* Label all 7 continents
* Label the oceans
* Using the latitude and longitude coordinates
from your spreadsheet, plot your 25 volcanoes on the world map
* Lightly color code and label the 7
major lithospheric plates: North American, South American, Eurasian,
African, Antarctica, Australian, and Pacific.
Part VI: Volcano Website
One of the newest ways to get information
is by searching the web. You will make a webpage that shares information
about volcanoes. Go to the team curriculum links page to find websites
that will give you this information.
Requirements:
Create a webpage with the following items:
* Three paragraphs of general
information about volcanoes (go to the curriculum
links page to find sites)
* A 2 paragraph summary of
each of 2 volcanoes that have erupted. Give the general information
in your words and make links to other sites for more information.
* A paragraph with links
about the hazards
of volcanoes
* A paragraph with links
about the causes
of eruptions
* A paragraph with links
about signs
that an eruption is likely
* A background (go to the
curriculum
links page)
