THEMES

Good over evil

On the simpliest level, the movie showed the forces of good would always triumph over evil. The odds appeared against the Autobots, who had to fight against the Decepticons as well as the gigantic Unicron. In the end, the small Matrix of light destroyed Unicron, and the Autobots were able to retore Cybertron. The deaths of Optimus Prime, Ironhide and the other Autobots, showed however, even good guys die sometimes. This is reality.

Destiny

“Destiny” was a strong theme running along the whole movie. Destiny was something which could not be defied and was demonstrated by various characters.

Hot Rod: Hot Rod, not Ultra Magnus was destined to be the leader of the Autobots- something unseen by even the greatest and wisest Autobot, Optimus Prime. Hot Rod was the first to feel that the Matrix could help the Autobots against Unicron. As the Autobots battled inside Unicron, Hot Rod was drawn apart from the others. It was Hot Rod who fought and defeated Galvatron. Only the true destined Autobot leader could open the power of the Matrix at the darkest hour.

Starscream: No matter how hard he tried, Starscream was just not destined to be the leader of the Decepticons. He tried to defy this destiny by usurping Megatron. But his moment of fame was short-lived as he was blown to ashes by Galvatron- Megatron reincarnated and rightful leader.

Unicron: Knowing the power of the Matrix could destroy him, Unicron tried to defy his destiny by sending Galvatron to destroy the Matrix. It was a battle he was destined to lose, however. His last words being “Destiny... you cannot destroy my... Destinyyyyyyyy... “

Sacrifice

Another major theme of the movie was sacrifice for the good of the people. The Transformers that died in the battle for Autobot city knew they were heavily outnumbered, but they kept on fighting. For instance, Windcharger(?) and Wheeljack, and Optimus Prime were killed, but in their death they allowed the other Autobots to turn the tide and beat off the Decepticons. -Matthew M. aka "Tank"
