Dear Visitor,

This site is based on the dining experiences of Joe and Meredith, two friends who live in Atlanta.

We have decided to rate the restaurants we visit on quality of food, service, atmosphere, and beverages. Meredith’s beverage ratings are based on beer or mixed drinks, while Joe’s deal strictly with sweet iced tea. We don’t review national chains, because you’ve already eaten at all of them anyway. We do, however, rate local chains. We speak freely about the restaurants we visit, but it’s all just opinion. We encourage you to visit these places and see for yourself what you think of them!

Enjoy the site and feel free to email us at [CLICK HERE] and let us know what you think! Bookmark this page and visit us often for ideas of where to dine in this fine city.

Restaurant owners and managers are invited to email us at [CLICK HERE] as we are always looking for great new restaurants to try. If you would like us to come and check out your restaurant, please email us at hesaidshesaidatlanta@yahoo.com.

Review Aside from the Sundail at the top of the Westin, The Mill has the best view/atmosphere year round. A huge patio area gives views to Piedmont Park and the Atlanta skyline that can leave you breathless during a midsummer's sunset. The food is mediocre, at best. I had "Cap'n Crunch Chicken Salad". It was pretty flavorless and the lettuce they used was old. The service was good, the waitress was patient with my witty humor. I don't eat here often, but on a nice cool evening, it's my view of choice. The Mill is in a great location. Sit on the patio and enjoy the view of Piedmont Park while you try to create a mental block of what you're eating. I ate a salad that was trying to impersonate salmon on mixed greens, but the "mixed greens" were tragic. The salad was the victim of more iceberg than the Titanic. And not even the green part of the iceberg - it was the stuff I throw away when I make a salad. Now for the salmon: it is a naturally flavorful fish that shouldn't be destroyed with too much culinary intervention. Unfortunately, it tasted as if someone had dumped several heaping tablespoons of Lawry's seasoning salt on it. Enough about the food. The service at the Mill was great. Our waitress was attentive and she never let our drinks get more than half empty. If you want to have a few beers with friends at a place with great atmosphere and a relaxed, casual setting, the Mill is for you. Just eat before you go.

Review This is not a German restaurant. Don't believe the hype. I lived a lot of my life in Germany (12+ years). I have been to dozens of German restaurants. This was not one. The Bavarian theme painted walls were hideous. Across the street was The Cheesecake Factory... it was on my mind during the entire meal. The best part of this visit was the 99x DJs doing an 80s music trivia game. The "wursts" were dry, the saurkraut was dry. The potato pancakes were great! The service was a joke. We walked in... sat ourselves... waited for about 10 minutes to get a menu. Our waitress left me sitting there with an EMPTY ice tea glass for over 10 minutes. She never even looked over to our table to see if we needed anything... (I'd tried calling her over several times, but the music was so loud she didn't hear me calling out). Germany and beer being two of my favorite things, I went to Atlanta Beer Garden with great expectations based on a review I read. The most disappointing thing about this place was the realization that it wasn’t a German restaurant after all. We went in with visions of Rahmschnitzel dancing in our heads, and left after a few substandard Hormel sausages. The menu was distinctly un-German; it didn’t have schnitzel, spaetzle, or any of the other German favorites I’ve come to love. It consisted mostly of burgers and fries. The atmosphere wasn’t particularly German either. There was baseball and car racing blaring on various televisions, neither of which I recall seeing in any German restaurant at any time during the 3 years I lived there. On a better note, the beer was tasty. I was impressed that Alt beer was on the menu, and it was good, although the glass in which it was served could have been thinner and more traditionally German. The service wasn’t the best, especially considering there were only 2 other tables in our section that were seated. The Atlanta Beer Garden is in Buckhead, which makes it cool by definition, but it would benefit by representing itself as what it really is: a bar, not a German Gasthaus.

Review   Roasters is charming. The décor is eclectic and comfortable, and the food was great. I ate a Caesars salad with creamed spinach on the side, and they both tasted wonderful. Just the smell of the food in the air at Roasters was great.

Review   The wait to get into the Flying Biscuit for Sunday brunch was about an hour, but the food was worth it. I had the LoveCakes, which consisted of black beans and a salsa with sour cream. They were delicious. So were the biscuits and their signature apple butter, which is not to be missed. The place was packed but the service was still very good.

COWTIPPERS
Piedmont & Monroe

Review   Cowtippers is an old standby. I can always count on Beth the bartender to mix me a great Bloody Mary on those Sunday mornings when I really need it. I can also depend on her to convince me that I really don't drink too much, and go ahead and have another. She's possibly the best bartender in Atlanta, which is worth mentioning in any review. I like to sit at the bar or outside on the deck. The wait service is average and so is the food, but it's the atmosphere at Cowtippers that makes it a favorite. It's a very popular place in Atlanta's gay scene, and it's a great place to meet people - don't be put off though, there are lots of families with kids there too. It's a place for everyone.

Joe: "Why'd you only give them 4 out of 5? You get them for free!"
Meredith: "They're domestic."

IT'S ALL ABOUT US:

Joe: I love food. It's all I'll eat. I eat out several times a week. I know what I like. I know what's good and what's not, and I ain't skeert to say so. I consider myself to be a diner with casual, conservative tastes. Fancy stuff doesn't do anything for me. As far as I'm concerned, steak needs steak sauce, fish needs tartar sauce, pizza needs hot sauce, chicken needs barbeque sauce, and everything else needs ketchup. I'm just an average guy with something to say. I'm a non-drinker so I'm not really qualified to rate alcohol. I do love Georgia Sweet Tea, so I'll be rating that. Pass the ketchup, please.

Meredith: A serious lover of food, I cooked in restaurants for years before and during college. I’m not a food snob (although I am philosophically opposed to ketchup) but I hate to see a dish that was thrown together without concern for quality or presentation, as I think we all do. I’m a big fan of beer, and if a place has a great atmosphere and good brews, I’m likely to go back regardless of the quality of food. I am also a martini purist (get it straight: if there’s vodka in it, it’s NOT a martini) and am usually on the lookout for a place that knows how to make it right. Bartenders beware: he who makes me a martini and leaves the pimento in the olive gets a scolding and an automatic rating of 1 in the beverage category.
