Even When I'm Alone

by Jordan V. Elliott

The words I want and need to say,
In my too little do I say too much?
Why do they assume I'm too broken?
Why do they assume all I want is a crutch?

I don't need a person to lean on,
I can stand fine on my own.
I'm not looking for a shoulder to cry on,
I can cry, even when I'm alone.

The weight of expectations confine
Pinned down by guilt and pride.
Who they want to be isn't who I am,
But now they can't stop the me they began.

I don't need a person to lean on,
I can stand fine on my own.
I'm not looking for a shoulder to cry on,
I can cry, even when I'm alone.

Protect me.
Reject me.
Confine me.
Define me.

I don't need someone to lean on,
I can stand fine on my own.
I'm not after some shoulder to cry on.
I will cry, even when I'm alone.
