Grandma's Carmel Popcorn
|
|
My grandma found this recipe somewhere and made it for us grandkids for Christmas. It immediately became a holiday tradition.
Ingredients
7 1/2 cups popped popcorn
CARMEL MIXTURE
--------------
2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup white syrup
1 cup butter
1 tsp salt
"RISING" AGENTS
---------------
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
Cooking
- Pop popcorn. Put popcorn in a large container or bowl. It will be used to stir in carmel mix later.
- Boil carmel mixture for five minutes over stovetop in a medium saucepan.
- Be prepared to pour mixture over popcorn before doing this next step! The active ingredient is the baking soda, and it will quickly bubble up after adding it!
- Add vanilla and baking soda.
- QUICKLY pour over popcorn and mix it in with popcorn, coating it well with carmel mixture.
- Baking the carmel popcorn:
- Microwave: Place coated popcorn into paper bag(s). Microwave on high for four minutes; stop and shake bag(s) every 1 1/2 minutes.
- Stovetop: Place coated popcorn into baking pan(s). Bake one hour at 250 degrees, stirring every 15 minutes.
- Spread out carmel popcorn to cool; stir frequently to keep popcorn from hardening into too large of chunks.
The best way to continuously make popcorn is with an air popper. It also does not require oil or grease.
