Pie Crust - one berry

Sure, you can buy pie crust dough all ready made and rolled out, but you can save yourself some money by making it yourself. The Crisco Crust is an unbeatable recipe.

Ingredients

MOIST
-----
up to 5 tablespoons cold water

DRY
---
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup Crisco shortening

Cooking

  1. Combine flour and salt in bowl.
  2. Cut in Crisco using pastry blender until flour forms pea-sized chunks.
  3. Sprinkle with water, 1 tablespoon at a time.
  4. Mix in water with a fork until dough sticks together.
  5. Form dough into a ball.
  6. Divide dough in half and reform the dough into two balls.
  7. Set one ball aside and continue to the next step.
  8. Press dough down to flatten top and bottom of each ball.
  9. Two methods for rolling dough:
  10. Use a rolling pin to roll dough into a circle.
  11. If using waxed paper, remove the top sheet before continuing to next step.
  12. Put a pie plate upside down over dough circle and trim dough 1 inch larger than the edge of the plate.
  13. Moving dough:
  14. Use steps 8-13 to roll out second ball of dough.
  15. Use second ball of dough to line a second pie plate or use it to top a filled pie after filling the first pie plate.

Tips

I recommend purchasing a pastry blender in order to adequately cut the shortening into the flour. If you do not have one, you can use two knives, but you must be able to cut the shortening very well in order to make the dough work well.

If you do not have a rolling pin, any smooth round surface will do if it can accept some pressure. I recommend a THICK round glass.

Your dough can be frozen for use later. (I recommend wrapping flattened dough balls in aluminum foil to help prevent freezer burn.)

Additionally, if you cut the rolled dough into strips and sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar. Cooking the strips at 400 degrees for 10 minutes (or until lightly browned) can make a simple dessert without pie filling!
