Hamburger Hot Dish - two berries

In some parts of the country, they call these a "casserole." In others, a "hot dish." My mother would ask us, "What do you want for dinner?" We'd say, "Food!" "What kind of food?" she'd ask. "The kind that you eat!" we'd reply. So she started giving us a choice -- casserole or a hot dish.

Ingredients

1 to 1 1/2 cups macaroni
1/2 to 1 lb hamburger
onion, diced
8 oz tomato sauce
1 tbsp chili or taco mix
1 tbsp sugar
salt
pepper

Cooking

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Cook macaroni according to package directions.
  3. Brown hamburger and onion in a skillet.
  4. Add salt, pepper, and tomato sauce. Let simmer for about five minutes.
  5. Drain macaroni and add to the hamburger mix.
  6. Add chili or taco mix and sugar. Mix well.
  7. Transfer to a casserole dish and bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes.

Tips

Adding a teaspoon of salt in to the macaroni while boiling will help keep it from sticking to the pan.

If you use a skillet like Visionware, you can use the skillet in the oven -- fewer dishes to wash!
