Hamburger and Rice Hot Dish - two berries

My grandmother was the cook in the family. She even owned her own cafe when she was younger. When she passed away, I got many of her cookbooks. This is a variation of a mock chow mein hot dish I found in one of her cookbooks.

Ingredients

1 lbs hamburger
onion, diced
1/2 cup rice
1 can cream of celery soup
1 1/2 cups water
1 tbsp soy sauce

OPTIONAL
--------
chopped celery
sliced mushrooms

Cooking

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Brown hamburger and diced onion in large skillet.
  3. Transfer hamburger to casserole dish and add rice, cream of celery soup, water, and soy sauce to hamburger. If using, also add chopped celery and sliced mushrooms. Mix well.
  4. Cover and place casserole dish in oven and bake 60 minutes at 350 degrees.

Tips

Instead of measuring out the water in a measuring cup, just use the empty soup can. One soup can holds between 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups of water.

If you use a skillet like Visionware, you can use the skillet in the oven -- fewer dishes to wash!
