Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu, 1988, Comtes Lafon
Of all the vintages I tasted of this particular wine, I find this the most inconsistent. When first
tasted in 1994 I found the wine had excellent colour and visual appearance. Nose and taste
were very closed up then, with rather dry tannins noticeable and the fruit not really shining
through. In 1996 and last early 1997 I tasted the wine twice again. Both times it appeared
more developed in nose, but rather unbalanced, with a distinct sweetness, almost as if the wine
was too heavily chaptalized, which I found hard to believe. Also distinctly sweet in first
mouthfeel. Not really opening up. Good length, tannins now satisfactorily reducing, but tasting
as if it had a hard time growing up.
Last tasted February 1997
