Meursault Charmes, 1989, Comtes Lafon
A clear example of how long Lafon's whites take to develop in bottle. When opened awfully
closed, with a golden colour that would not put a Vendange Tardive wine to shame. Very
prominent wood and alcohol at first, both in nose and taste. I gave the wine all the time to
open up, and almost 2 and a half hours later it finally did. Very intense vanilla nuttiness with
impressive complexity. Developing a cathedral like power in the mouth. Very fullbodied,
creamy, fat, lots of glycerine. Long long aftertaste in perfect harmony, yet still clearly young
and with a distinct mineralness. An almost classic 1989 appearance, combined with the power
that Lafon whites can present. Worth waiting for, which will be late 90's I'd say.
Tasted May 1994.
