Volnay Champans, 1993, Comtes Lafon
Two notes also, one from cask in July 1994, the wine then already impressing me enormously. Lafon makes this wine from over 70 year old vines, 1993 giving them a yield of not even 25 hl/ha. Bulgeing with layers and layers of beautiful ripe fruit at young age already. Silky mouthfeel, with beautiful depth and complexity and a stunningly good finish. The sort of Burgundy that makes one gasp every now and then.
The bottle sample consistent with first impressions. Overwhelmingly fruity nose, deep colour,
almost blinding with extract. Perfect fruitiness, silky power overwhelming the mouth, perfect
lingering finish, almost convincing Pieter that red Burgundy is really wine too (private joke).
The wine was tasted in a line up of the three 93 Lafon Volnays, with a bottle of 1988 DRC
Echezeaux for reference. That bottle stood up against every wine, except for this Champans.
The sort of wine that makes one greedy, especially in a few years. Will drink well from late
90's I'd say. Grand Cru level.
Last tasted February 1996 at Pieter de Bruijn's
