Dear Friends,
In the days after completing this poem I felt very unsure about it, wondering if it truly captured what I was feeling. Now I treasure this poem so much because it DOES say what I wanted it to. And I marvel that a human being could move me so much, so passionately, to write these words...
I wrote this poem on the first day of the Spring of 1998. That Saturday I was driving around, following my daydreams. They led me to gorgeous Saratoga, California, in the shadow of the Santa Cruz Mountains. I saw a sign that said "Madrona Cemetery," and something made me turn there...
The new Madonna song that played on the radio and the serenity amidst all of the grave markers infused me with a deep sense of spirituality. I parked in the cemetery and marvelled that there was no sound except the gentle song of the soft spring rain. There I lost myself in my new poem and felt a wistful sense of release when I finished it...
