ELISE 31498

It's like my life
Is floating out to sea
As your life
Stretches inland
--To heights I know
You will reach
And sights I will
Only imagine.
I cling to this
Merciless nanosecond,
Mournful that already
I begin to forget
The creamy dunes
Of your lovely face.
Soon, forever,
My heart will never see

Your gentle shores again;
But the haunting winds
Of your inspiration
Shall always, always
Kiss my sails.
Ultimately all lives
Have a separate
Map and compass;
But the click
Of that door
As I leave you there
Will nearly sink me
--As surely as
A cruel storm waiting
On the other side
Of the dark exit.

Background: Written the night of 22 March 1998, the day after composing another poem, "Alchemy." I was listening a lot to Madonna's haunting CD "Ray of Light" while creating "Farewell." The idea for this poem came during a reflective walk earlier in the evening as I kept thinking about how to express a seemingly inevitable farewell...
