The Wine Cellar

This is where I will take a few wines out of my cellar each week and share my experience with you.

(photo not Available) Groth Napa Cabernet 1994
This wine was tasted twice and with consistant notes each time. This Napa cabernet has excellent concentration and color, with currant fruit aromas. Currant, cherries, and tar flavors evolve in the glass into one of the most relaxing bottles of wine I have had in a long time.

(photo not available) Mayacamas Cabernet 1991
This Napa valley cab was tightly wound when it was first opened. However it showed the promise of intense cherry fruit. Color and consentration on this wine were excellent, however the wine never did open up and deliver on its promise of fruit in the glass. I found this wine to be thin and tart.

(photo not available) Mayacamas Cabernet 1987
This bottle of Napa Valley cab was slightly oxidized and did not show as will as a clean bottle. It did eventually open up and show some of the reason Mayacamas is one of the longest lived wineries in CA. This wine evolved to become smooth and silky with layers of chocolate, plum, anise and cherry flavors coming through lightly in the glass.

Robert Pepi Chardonnay 1991
Robert Pepi Puncheon Fermented Chardonnay is one of the finest examples of how an older chardonnay doesn't have to be tired. This bottle of wine was vibrantly fruity and floral in aroma, with fresh peach and apple aromas, and flavors that turned creamy and apealling on the finish.

In 1994 this winery was purchased by Kendal Jackson and their wines were taken out of the Eastern US market. I hope all you people in CA enjoy this winery because I can't any more.

Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon 1987
This Napa Valley Cabernet was smooth and supple. The tanic edge was very subdued.
The aroma was full of the promise of ripe cherries, currant and hints of strawberries. The wine is long on promise and short on delivery. I found the flavors hinted at in the aroma, were too light and hidden behind the tannins.

This wine last tasted by Wine Spectator at 70 Points. I think they are being a little harsh but this is not a stellar bottle of Cabernet.

Sterling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 1989
This Napa Valley Cabernet has an intense aroma of chocolate and coffee, which unfortunately fades quickly in the glass. This bottle of wine was light and thin with currant and plum flavors but with absolutely no finish. It was in your mouth one second and gone the next.
This is a real shame as Sterling Vineyards is a personal favorite of mine.

This wine was last tasted by Wine Spectator at 83 points, a very generous rating as this wine is obviously fading fast.

Churchill's Agua Alta 1987 Porto

Last tasted 6/3/99
One word is all that is needed to describe this port "Wow".
Intensely concentrated and inky black in color. Filled with Caramel and grape and berry aromas that follow on into that first sip. The tannic backbone of this wine is quickly washed away by the incredible fruit on the finish.

Saintsbury 1997 Reserve Carneros Chardonnay

Last tasted 12/16/99
This is one big bottle of Chardonnay. Pick your favorite Cabernet drinker who does not like Chardonnay at all and make this the wine to win him/her over with. Enormously rich and concentrated this wine is brimming over with spicy fruit, toasted oak , fig, pear and citrus notes.

Last rated by wine spectator at a 93. I agree completely. Wonderful bottle of white wine worthy of any wine lovers praise.

I must sadly note though that I only have one bottle let in the cellar.

The Williamsburg Winery 1994 Act 12 of Sixteen Nineteen Chardonnay.

Last tasted 12/24/99

This Chardonnay though mature is not fading. The color is a deep straw yellow without a hint of oxidation. Showing great depth of oak in the aroma, and a light fruit bouquet is hiding behind that broad beam of oak. This wine was partially oak barrel fermented in french oak and then oak aged.
Full of apple and fig flavors and a bright lively acidity, this bottle, well kept would last easily another 3-4 years. I have three more in the cellar and will try one again next year too check to see if I am right.

All around one damn fine bottle of wine
