Rio San Martin - wildlife
Blue-fronted Amazon Parrot at the Tucunare Lodge in Bella Vista. These beautiful birds are frequently kept as pets, but most people do not know that keeping one of these is like having a 2-year-old child for 50 years. They require a lot more attention and care than dogs!
Camouflaged and quiet. Rufescent Tiger Heron.
Kingfisher. A pair of these birds hold a river front territory of about 100 yards/meters.
Turkey Vulture - they are often outcompeted by more aggressive Black Vultures.
A species of Morpho butterfly. Remember the film 'Papillion' starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman? It claimed that the blue "dye" from these butterflies was used in the manufacture of American banknotes...there is no dye...the blue coloration is "structural" and not pigmental. That's OK. We know what they think of Piranhas! I live near Hollywood and movie people live in a bubble.
A young Black Caiman that Jeff and Ted caught. It kept calling for mama, so we took a few pictures, let it go and made ourselves scarce in case its calls for help were quickly answered.
Capybara, is a semi-aquatic herbivorous animal and is the world's largest rodent. They are usually terrified of humans and disappear into the bushes as soon as spotted. However, when we went up the Rio San Joaquin, a small tributary of the Rio San Martin, we encountered some Capybara that had no fear of humans. There were three of them, the peered at us for a while then turned around and put all their rear ends together and walked backwards to the water's edge, their butts still touching. Then defecated together in one big steaming pile. I had never seen this interesting behavior before. Were they hoping to fool the local Jaguar that any one animal capable of defecating in such quantities is too risky to be around?
Now THAT'S a housefly.
Neotropic Cormorant - they usually feed on mid-size tetras.
I'm not sure what this cute creature is, but a local girl had made it her pet.
Black-collared Hawks.
Blue Heron
Snowy Egret.
