Gy,. australis belongs to the elongated Gymnogeophagus species that include G. gymnogenys and G. labiatus. This appears to be an undescribed species. This fish has a taller dorsal fin and less coloration on the body when compared to G. meridionalis and G. rhabdotus. In Uruguay, it is fairly rare, except in the southwest.
