Crenicichla saxatilis (Linnaeus, 1758) Group: Saxatilis Distribution: Coastal river drainages of the Guyanas (Guyana, Surinam, French Guyana) and the coastal rivers between the Amazon delta and French Guyana in Brazil. Type Locality: Carolina Creek (Malasie), Suriname River System. Size: 10-12 inches Comments: Frequently imported. This is a highly variable species with numerous silvery-white spangling on the sides near the humeral blotch and caudal peduncle. Females have fewer spangling. The upper half of the humeral spot closest to the eye has a notch or gap. It can be a very aggressive aquarium resident but it is also easily induced to spawn.
