A neighbor was coming from her back yard also, she had heard the crash and saw Julie fall from the corner of her eye. Julie was standing up and bleeding from her head and nose. All I really saw was a big gash in her head. I told my neighbor to call for help and took Julie out front. (I did think of neck injury, but she was standing.) My neighbor came back and took care of my baby while we waited.
The base ambulance and fire service were here very quickly, but it seemed like eternity to me at that time. They put her on a board and neck brace. Someone had called for a helicopter.
They put us in the ambulance and took us to the helicopter pad. This is where they told me I would not be able to go. She was going to Oakland Children's hospital which was over an hour away. I had no idea how to get there or if my husband knew what had happened yet. Mike showed up as they were lifting off with Julie. Someone had found him and told him what had happened.
We went to the security office and waited for the California Highway Patrol to come and take us to Oakland. We arrived almost two hours after Julie did. She was still in ER. The Doctor said all of her tests were clear.
ALL OF HER TESTS WERE CLEAR.
THANK YOU GOD. THANK YOU GOD. THANK YOU GOD.
We asked about her tests, cat scan and all... JULIE WAS OK. She was not doing what they were asking her to do, like squeeze their finger, tell them her name, etc... But she is shy, as some of you know. The doctors and nurses were laughing at her once I arrived and bribed her to do what they asked. Her first words to me were, "I want this poky thing off." (Her neck brace) I said, "If you want it off, you have to do what they ask." She did.
Our hearts have been exploding with joy ever since.
She was stitched up, 5 on the inside and 12 on the outside of her head and was sent to be observed in ICU overnight.
Luckily, Julie had fallen on a pile of 2 x 4's on our patio or the outcome would have been very different. The Doctor said that most children who fall out of a window aren't as lucky.
She made a friend in ICU in the bed next to her and got to watch movies and color as much as she wanted. She also had many of her favorite stuffed toys that her sister, Kelsey brought from home.
We went home Friday.
