Song of the Week ~ 10/9/98 "You Made Me Love You "

Recipe of the Week ~ "The Kind of Cake That I'd Die For" ~ Chocolate Cake with Cream Filling

~THE FIFTIES~

"Americans were celebrating the abundance of the post-war years, and the homemaker's art was at its peak. With women back in the home, new and complicated recipes were eagerly tried and exchanged over the back fence." ~ quote from the history of the Pillsbury Bake-off Contest

Well, that may have been true of some women, but on January 21, 1957, Patsy Cline was busy tearing down those fences!! On that day in history, Patsy made her national debut on The Arthur Godfrey Show. The show had several sponsors, one of them being Pillsbury Cake Mix.

At about the time Patsy was thrilling a nation, a former L.I. beauty queen was thrilling her family with a most delicious cake. Everyone wanted this recipe, and she eventually gave it to my mother. A few months ago, my mother finally passed it on to me. As a child, this is the kind of cake " that I'd die for". I present this cake made with a Pillsbury Cake Mix in honor of Patsy making her national debut on "Godfrey". For it was then and there that an audience and an entire nation, saw , and fell in love with The Cline. PATSY, YOU MADE US LOVE YOU !

Cream Filling

You'll Need:

  • 3 cups of milk
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Mix all ingredients except the vanilla and place in the top half of a double-boiler. Cook until firm and thick, stirring. Add vanilla and remove from heat. Allow to cool and use for the filling between the layers of the cake.

    Chocolate Frosting *

    You'll Need:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 scant tbs. cornstarch
  • 1- 1/3 cups of HOT water
  • 3 squares of unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tbs. butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Blend sugar and cornstarch into top of a double-boiler. Add water. Cook until thick and clear. Melt the chocolate in milk ( you can do this in microwave or on stove top in a small pan) and add immediately to the cornstarch mixture. Add the butter and continue cooking until rich and smooth. Always keep stirring . Remove from heat and add vanilla. Beat until cool enough to spread.
*This frosting can also be used as a filling if you prefer instead of using the cream filling. I enjoy the cream filling best! 1
