Patsy said, "This recipe is one of my favorites. It is from a cookbook put together during WW II by a group of women from where I live, out in the country. It's neat. It's called "Colony Steaks " My mom and sister both say that this is an easy recipe to make."
You'll need:
8 thinly pressed hamburger patties, 4-5 inches across
4 oz. can of sliced mushrooms
1 can of Cream of Mushroom soup
4 slices of American or Swiss Cheese
On top of four of the patties, place several slices of mushrooms in the center of the patties. Top each of the four mushroomed patties with 1 tbsp. of mushroom soup. Lay a clice of cheese over each. Keep 1/2 inch of outer edge free to seal. Lay the remaining four patties over the topped patties, and press outer edges together to seal. Brown the four sealed patties in a skillet with scant shortening. Remove from the skillet and place the patties in a very lightly greased, shallow baking dish. Spread the rest of the mushrooms and soup over the patties and add 1/2 cup of water. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until done. SERVES 4
