"Stay Asleep" Turkey Burgers

Howdy! It's Recipe of the Week time. "If I Could Only Stay Asleep!" How many times have you made that wish ? If you're having difficulty staying asleep, among other things, such as avoiding caffeine and other stimulants, you should eat meals that are high in "tryptophan". Some foods that are naturally high in tryptophan are turkey and whole grains. So, to help you sleep better at night, I present delicious turkey burgers for dinner. They are great for lunch too!

"Stay Asleep" Turkey Burgers

  • 1 lb. ground turkey meat
  • 1 tsp. seasoned salt
  • 3/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • or use 1/4 cup of chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup of chopped green peppers ~ optional
  • 1/8 tsp. black pepper

You can be very creative with this recipe, adding and substituting a variety of items. Sometimes I'll add either a bit of Worcestershire, A-1, or Barbeque sauce to the mix for a different twist. Also, I've sometimes added 1/2 cup of flavored breadcrumbs, an egg and a little milk, for a meatloaf-like burger

In a bowl, mix all the ingredients and shape meat into 4 nice size burgers. Cook in fry pan sprayed with PAM as you would cook a hamburger, browning on both sides, making sure meat is cooked all the way through (about 6 minutes on each side) Serve on whole wheat buns, either plain or grilled.

Before you go to sleep that night, treat yourself to a relaxing cup of warmed milk! It may be considered an old-fashioned remedy for insomnia, but there's something to this one because milk is also naturally high in tryptophan!
