One word can make a world of difference. In the case of GUADALUPE LA POBLANITA, it is the word "AUTHENTIC" that mangager Theresa Sivernale and her mother, owner/cook Guadalupe Hernandez, both of whom hail from Puebla, Mexico, use to describe the native cuisine they serve out of their homey shoebox of a restaurant in New Haven. "AUTHENTIC" honest-to-goodness Mexican is not nearly as spicy as Americans believe it to be, explains Theresa. Instead, mother and daughter rely on fresh ingredients and trusty family recipes to expertly produce some of the BEST MEXICAN WE'VE HAD north of the border.

Chiles rellenos, caldo de camarones, mole poblano--all were, in another word, delicious. Equally pleasing were the prices. You may mix and match two tacos, burritos, tostadas or gorditas (served with your choice of five fillings and rice and beans) for UNDER $5. Most dinners are under $6.50. Wow! And, if you INSIST on fiery punch in exchange for your peso, Theresa will bring you a selection of homemade salsas to season your meal. YOU decide how HOT hot is.
