to hear the Red River Valley.
On July 15, 1869 Manitoba joined the
Dominion of Canada.
Thousands of lonely
lakes reflecting the glories of the sunset; dog teams toiling
across the snows of the Pass during the annual Trappers'
Festival; farm families at work on the flatlands, and miners
tapping the rich ore bodies of the
Precambrian Shield the Royal Ballet performing in the open
air on a long summer evening. Canada's keystone province has life
and beauty in abundance.
Scottish and Irish settlers made their homes in the Red River Valley starting in 1812, but Manitoba owes
its foundation to Louis Riel and his Metis . Their initiatives led Canada to accept the
territory as a province in 1870, attracting large scale
immigration from Ontario and many parts of Europe.
The provincial flower
Adopted March 16, 1906.
The prairie crocus is an early spring flower
often seen pushing through the last prairie snow.
The flowers range from light lavender to bluish purple
and wear an outer coating of hair to protect
them from sudden changes in temperature.
Manitoba was the first prairie province to adopt a floral emblem.
I have a friend that lives
in Eriksdale and I hope to visit her one
