Description
The chestnut tree is related to the oak tree. The tree originated in the Mediterranean Basin and Asia Minor. Although is is called a nut, and has a shell and the look of a nut, it is actually more closely related to a starchy grain. Each chestnut contains a cream colored kernal covered by a thin-brown skin.

Preparation and Serving
Chestnuts are never eaten raw, due to their tannic acid content. They must boiled or roasted before eaten. They are added to soups, salads and stuffings. They can also be ground into flour that is added to cakes, pancakes, waffles, porridge, and bread.
