III
The Superior Council of the Order met and the preparation started. The Master and his six acolytes went up to the top of the Tower and everything was prepared to light the Blue Flame. Us, the seven chosen ones to be subjected to the trial, were waiting at the base of the Tower, many meters under the ground level, concentrating our minds in the moments that were about to come, and we knew they weren't be easy. When the moon was beginning it's ascent over the mountains to the East, we were driven to the first floor, at the ground level. There we were removed of our cloaks and staffs, and une by one we received a parchment with a spell that could be used to illuminate us in the coming trials. Slowly we went up the helical stairways, carved in the walls of the tower, so ancient as the memory of the men, but new besides the walls of the Enchanted Castle that, as legends tells, were born from the same entrails of the mountain... Solemn chants seems to come from every closed door that left behind us and the air seems to vibrate with every move of the flames at the torches. We finally reached the last floor, where we were removed of our clothes and dressed us with heavy white robes. The moment have come. One by one we climbed to the roof where raises the shrine: seven stone arches finished off with blue crystals cleverly carved simulating flames. These arches were mounted on a big, concave disc made of transparent crystal that inside have engraved the same shades that the full moon shows to our eyes. Thus, when the moon shines up in the sky, its reflect on the disc seems to be the same moon. So, when the moon reached it highest point in the night, the Seven Great Magi of the Order covered the disc's surface with a very aromatic oil that immediately become inflamed in a big yellow flame that after a few seconds, obeying the Master's wish that illuminated the crystals crowning the arches, became of an intense, deep blue, and transparent as the ocean, cold as the eternal ice on the mountains. We sat on the floor, our backs toward the big Blue Flame, each one positioned in front of one of the shrine's arches. The knees on the chest, and the sweated hands on them, didn't let us turn to see the last preparative of the ritual, so old as our history registers and that now will decide my future. Thus, overwhelmed for the anticipation of the unknown moment approaching, we were ready to hear our names for the last time until become a Master - in many more years - or when our failure turns us in simple peasants without the power and protection of the Tower, forgetting all the knowledge, even our own names and all we are, forever... That's the price to pay for belong to the Blue Flame Order. One by one we were called and each one of us occupied a place under each arch. Now the preparative were finished and the Test begun. There were no instructions to follow. I just knew that I should walk to the very center of the flame and wait until feel something, different for each person, the only thing that would let us know we must walk out. I don't remember who was the first, because my mind was far away, in other lands, maybe saying good-bye to that special Lady. I just remember that I heard a scream and what I saw filled me with anguish and mercy, because at the other side of the fire lied one of my comrades, his gaze lost, the mouth contracted and the robe made shreds. Beside him, the parchment was finished being consumed for the fire. Seeing that, two of the remaining applicants turned to the Master and implored, but they weren't heard, rather obligated to go into the flames from where the exited with their bodies untouched, but there were no life in their eyes. I almost couldn't bear it, so I decided to walk the few steps that separated me from my destiny. I went into the flame and I was surprised because I was not feeling any heat, not even my own body's heat. I turned slowly looking the eyes of the great Magi whom contemplated impassive what happened in the shrine. Suddenly hundreds of voices crowded into my head, voices that came to me from far away, beyond any human can hear, but were strange voices, lacking words, voices that just can transmit sensations, feelings and some kind of magic. Some voices were sweet and made me feel far away, hundreds of meters over the mountains; other were sad and resigned, like a farewell; and others were hunger, fury, the blood boiling in the veins, the need of killing to avoid getting killed. When I opened my eyes I was in my place under the stone arch, kneeled, thirsty and stunned, The moon was almost touching the horizon and the pale light of dawn insinuating behind the mountains. The parchment was still in my hand, I could feel it. With the daylight my robe started to change its color, without an apparent reason. I turned to look to the center of the shrine and I saw three of my comrades doing the same. Their robes were changing its colors, but they were green, brown and gray, but mine was blue. The great Master walked to the center of the disc where the flame was now extinguished. He looked at me and I was about to stand up when I felt the parchment changing in my hand until it became a staff that looked like oak, almost of my body's height, I was confused, but too tired to ask any question, so I went to my room to take a rest. I woke up when the day was ending. I was feeling something different inside me, but I couldn't understand what it was. I had too many questions but I wasn't able to stand up and go for help, so I closed my eyes and fell into a restless sleep. When the new day started I woke up and I found many changes in my belongings: all my clothes now were blue, of different tones, and my old spellbook disappeared and in its place I found a beauty book with bright black leather covers with the Order's emblem engraved on both sides. I opened the book just to find all the pages were empty, but when I thought of a basic spell to illuminate my room, it appeared written on the first page. Now the curiosity was too much, so I immediately went with the Master. I made too many questions, but received just une answer: Let the time show you the truth. That's the only thing He said, that and that my real trial was about to start, and that it would lead me to the paths of the world, learning from the beings that are around us, but whom we never hear. After that, I decided to depart taking advantage of the darkness of the last new moon of the summer, avoiding to be seen, because I didn't want to answer about where I'm going, because I didn't know how to answer. But, how to depart without a word to my Lady? How to send her a message and let her know I must go, but that my thoughts would be always with her to come to her when she needs of my presence? I have ridden many hours thinking about that when suddenly an old owl, frequent visitor of the Castle and the Tower, landed on my shoulder and somehow I felt he told me:
Frightened I looked everywhere looking for somebody near to me, but just the owl and the other night creatures were there.
With those simple words, something inside me lightened the knowledge that the Blue Flame putted in my being, and I could understand some of the events that were happening, I could understand that my mission were related with the animals and plants and beasts over the world. I could understand that in that moment I should start to learn from zero again. I wrote a message and I gave it to the Owl, who started the fly to the Castle with a soft and silent flutter. I prepared a good bonfire, ate something and meditating waited until his return. The dawn has come when I felt a weight on my shoulder. I fixed my eyes in my messenger and asked him about his deliver. "Everything is right" he said. She received the message and with a smile and a cloud of sadness in her eyes She send me her blesses. Now everything was ready to start the real journey..
