In a 2 quart measure, mix sugar and evaporated milk. Cover and microwave 4-5 minutes, until boiling, stirring once or twice during cooking to dissolve sugar on sides of bowl.
Cover again and microwave on medium (50%) power 4-6 minutes, until mixture reaches a soft-ball stage 235-240 degrees F.)
Add butter, chocolate, nuts and vanilla. Stir until blended. Pour into a buttered 8-inch square dish. Let cool, then cut into small squares.
