Diamond

I lost the diamond from my ring
And now I'll have to find it
'Cause it's not like losing someone's name or number
Or something you need to remind me of
It was the only diamond you could ever afford
Now I'm searching through the trash and under every board
And I'll search until I find it
The only diamond from my ring

Maybe it turned back into coal amid the coffee grounds
I thought that maybe it was just a bad dream
The diamond that I couldn't find
But now there's something going on at the church next door
And the problem with the diamond, well
Maybe it's more than just a jewel that I can't find
That I can't just leave behind

Well, people have to come home day after day
Whether they're a winner or not
And people have to smile and shake your hand
Whether or not you've got a lot
I read the papers, I never see my name
I listen to the radio, it's always the same
But now I've lost my diamond
I don't think I'm gonna see it again
