Pansy and Ivy Wedding Cake
May, 2005
This was my 6th wedding cake, for SCA friends. It was iced in buttercream with buttercream basketweave added. The pansies were made with air-dried buttercream, and the ivy leaves were made of gumpaste, glued to floral wire with royal icing and then wired into vines with floral tape. I was dismayed by how long the ivy took to make, but thrilled with the effect on the cake.
The bride wanted purple and yellow icing pansies. By happy coincidence, I happened to already have a pot of pansies in exactly those colors sitting on my front porch, so I had live models from which to copy the coloration.
Here is a close up of the top of the cake, which shows more (but not all) of the detail.
