ORIENTAL PHOENIX
RATING: 9/10 (dinner)
MUST HAVE: vegetable crispy noodles;
shrimp rolls appetizer
The new location on 58th and 1st SE is a beautiful backdrop to this wonderful food. The menu
has changed a little, but our favorites and still there--chicken in tamarind sauce, pepper beef.
The service is always great and the quality has, if anything, gotten better in the last year.
Bravo, Phoenix.
PEKING GARDEN
RATING: 9.8/10 (lunch)
MUST HAVE: onion pancakes;
Congee
This is the most wonderful place for congee in Calgary. Congee is a thick rice soup, served typically
for breakfast, or anytime for a snack. You may have tried it in other restaurants only to be disappointed
by the blandness. The Peking Garden has made this staple food something really delicious! The best
congee is the chicken and abalone. Along with that, you must have the "oily stick" which is a deep
fried cut-up doughnut, which you place on top of your soup.
Do try some of the other Northern-style dim sum dishes on the menu (no cart service here.) Located in the Shaganappi
Village Mall on Varsity Drive. On the weekends the wait for a table is a long one, so be prepared.
