HISTORY IS MADE!
Can you believe there are those who think the strange combination of Chicken & Waffles originated at Roscoe's in California? NOT! Actually, WELL'S RESTAURANT, on 7TH AVENUE in NEW YORK CITY, (HARLEM to be exact) has been serving Chicken & Waffles for over 60 years. That's right, 60 years! They celebrated their 60TH ANNIVERSARY October, 1998.

1930'S, 40'S and 50's were a time when black owned businesses in Harlem were really jump'n!  Famous movie stars and sports figures owned and operated various establishments in the 50 block radius of Harlem and Sugar Hill. One of the many stories most remembered about Well's during the time was when Sammy Davis, Jr. and Kim Novak were dating.  After eating at the popular eatery and hangout, Kim left her fur coat. The coat then came up missing. It wasn't until Frank Sinatra made a stern announcement for the coat's return that it appeared back at Well's Restaurant, the next day. Sidney Portier had a rib place  right next door on 7th Avenue. Count Basie had a bar and restaurant. Roy Campanella had a liquor store up the block and Sugar Ray Robinson had a barber shop, cleaners and bar. Sugar Ray at that time had the entire block.

With the influx of a variety of patrons gathering at the famous restaurant and bar during the after hours, Mr. Wells came up with the idea of Chicken & Waffles. Because it was in the witching hour, many could not make up their minds on whether to have dinner or breakfast. So he concocted the curious dish. At the beginning he was not sure if it will go over well with his unique clientele.  He gave away the entree. The rest is history!

So, now to recap: Chicken & Waffles - Wells Restaurant in Harlem started it! The odd, yet very delicious dish popped up in Los Angeles later, by way of New Yorker, Roscoe, who is now, back in New York after another company in the late 70's took over. They just kept the name. Gladys Knight and Ron Winans also have a place in Atlanta, also serving Chicken & Waffles.

Now, in the city of Dallas, Texas, thanks to Sandora Cooper and her daughter Tracey, we have SANDORA'S BOX, in downtown Dallas. Ask about the secret of the sensational, mouth-watering Salmon Croquettes and the rest of the very unique, home cooked items on the menu.
