River Rat Adventure Trip     by Deb Schuett

It was a hot, sticky day as we headed down to the VERY SMALL town of
Wedron, IL for the BFW Canoe Adventure outing. It took place on Saturday, July 21.
14 members/friends of the BFW group met at Ayers Landing to pick up their
canoes and take a bus ride to our starting point - 12 miles up river.
The roaring Fox river was surprisingly crowded with many people
canoeing this same section, including a large Marine platoon.
Show Me the Sights !!
Many sights were noted along this beautiful bluff strewn section of river. BFW
President Chris Bono commented, "The orange bikini was worth noting". There were
many sightings of people deciding to swim in the river instead of
canoeing it. Also sighted were groups of canoers that decided to park
in the middle of the river. There might be 3, 4, or 5 canoes tied
together side by side and anchored, and one group was shooting off firecrackers
in the middle also.
Young & Slow - Yes He is....
It made for some tricky maneuvering on the part of us
BFW canoers. Speaking of maneuvering, the river was, not surprisingly,
low due to the high temps and lack of rain, and this reporter spotted
many BFW canoes grounded and needing manual towing. The Bono and Rossi
canoes decided to hitch up and canoe the river as one - making their
journey a bit harder to steer and a bit slower.
We Want Adventure !!
At the lunch stop, the restroom facilities were reported to be "an experience". You'll have
to ask BFW Pres. Chris about it. We passed two spots on the river where
brave river goers were jumping off a high bluff into the river. We had
no takers in the BFW group. The big news of the day was that Jerry and
Pam took off down the river with some other party's canoe. They were
chased by the owners and had to pull off on the bank and switch. Ha!
Enjoy the photographs and be watching for the next BFW adventure. We
hope to have something planned for the fall.
