I have chosen this little critter as my name sake as he eats, roots, shoots, and leaves!!
Wombats are Marsupials found only in Mainland Australia and Tasmania. They are large fur bearing animals that use thier claws and strong leg muscles to make burrows as long as 20 meters in the ground where they reside. Their teeth are continuously growing with a single pair of chisel like incisors in each jaw. They grow to a length of about 3 feet(1M) and weigh about 88 pounds(40kg). They bear thier young singly once a year and are carried in thier mothers pouch for about 6 months.
There are three species of wombats, the Forest Marsupial, the Southern Hairy Nose Wombat, which is very rare and the Northern Hairy Wombat. the common wombat or the Forest Marsupial is found are found in coastal Forest areas. The Southern Hairy Nose Wombat is and open plains species and is found on the Nullarbor plain or in South Austrlia"s Murray Land. The Cousin to the Southern Wombat is the Northern Hairy Nose Wombat which is on the endangered species list is found only in the Queensland National Park.
Wombats generally eat grasses and leaves. They are an annoyance to the farmers as they tunnel under the fences after grazing on the farmland.
