Civil Defense Shelter - Spaulding High School
Beneath Spaulding High School - there exists an old fall out shelter. I was fortunate enough to tour it and take some pictures. I was little disappointed to find that the Fall Out Shelter is just used for storage for the school department. There are large quantities of school desks, old films of football games, and athletic equipment store down there as well a lot of empty space. There are no emergency rations, no dehydrated foods, and no survival equipment. I imagine at the height of the Cold War it was stocked with the emergency supplies one would expect to find in a fall out shelter.

I could find no information on this Fall Out Shelter - but the idea of Civil Defense was formed by the United States Government as a defense for civilians in case of nuclear attack. The Civil Defense Act of 1950 made the idea an official program. The purpose of Civil Defense was to protect the civilian population. I believe the fall out shelter beneath Spaulding High School originated in the 1950's as a result of the Civil Defense Programs. This is just a guess, if anybody has any knowledge of the origins of the Spaulding High School Fall Out Shelter please contact me.

What is puzzling about the fall out shelter is the amount of sand on the floor. There are huge piles of sand that cover a huge portion of the floor. See below picture - you can see sand (lots of sand) everywhere. image one of air raid shelter
