1902 Dodge's Hotel (a year after it closed)
J. THORNE DODGE - Owner of Dodge's Hotel until his death in 1901
The most popular and famous hotel in Rochester was the Dodge Hotel. The hotel was located on Central Square near the train station. It could accommodate nearly 70 people and was famous for the excellent meals it served.
Jonathan Dodge purchased the property of Ordione's Tavern in 1834 and removed the old buildings and built his new hotel. The stables of the hotel could house 70 to 80 horses and Mr. dodge ran a succesful stagecoach business with routes going to Ossipee and Dover.
In 1851 a fire destroyed the entire hotel. Jonathan Dodge rebuilt a new brick hotel and it was very impressive looking. Johnathan Dodge passed away in 1871 and his widow continued the hotel until her death in 1889. Her son Jonathan Thorne ran the hotel until his death in 1901. Jonathan had no heirs and the hotel was no more. For many years F. W. Woolworth occupied the spot of Dodge's Hotel.
