Read about the combat exploits of Rochester resident Frank Ames
Up till 1914 there had been other "world wars" such as the Napoleonic Wars or the Seven Years War of 1756-1763 but World War I or the Great War (which it was called before World War II) was a much more massive war and more deadly contest of arms then the earlier wars. The war would see the introduction of gas warfare and on the Western Front from 1914 until 1918 the fighting consisted largely of trench warfare. There were over 37 million casualties in the war (more than 300,000 American casualties).
