3/4 C. butter, softened
1 1/2 C. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
1 3/4 C. flour
1/2 C. cocoa
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 C. buttermilk or sour milk*
1/2 C. boiling water
Cream butter, sugar and vanilla in a large mixer bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Combine flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture. Add boiling water and beat till smooth. Pour into a wax paper-lined 13"x9" pan. Bake 350' for 35-40 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool 10 minutes, remove from pan. Cool completely and frost as desired.
*To sour milk: Use 1 1/2 tsp. vinegar plus milk to equal 1/2 C.
