POPEYED BIRDSTONE

The following photos are of a Saddleback Popeyed Birdstone which is believed to be an artifact of the indigenous peoples (Adena) of central Ohio and Indiana from the era of approximately 1000 BC. The birdstone was a surface find in Wyandot County Ohio, just north of Carey. The bird is about 7 centimeters long from beak to tail. The stone is finely carved and well polished showing a very high degree of craftsmanship. The birdstone must have been held in very high esteem to deserve the skill and time required to produce a piece of this quality.

There are two bridge rings on the breast line. The upper ring is partially missing and the left eye is also broken off. The color in the stone is a marbled mix of tan and aqua.
