I hope you find my artwork interesting and unique. It is a reflection of my life and influences.
My love of art, though undoubtedly sparked by my mother in my very early life, began to show its strength in my early school years.
My traditional, post secondary art training was acquired at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. I graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Education Degree and a double art major and later another degree in counselling psychology. In the beginning I was fascinated by acrylic paint and clay sculpture.
While teaching art in secondary school I did not do much of my own artwork.
I have had some interesting career diversions along the way. In 1980 when my only child was diagnosed with leukemia I had to leave my teaching/counselling job. My son and I moved to Victoria, BC where I earned a living and practised my talents by making jewelry and developing a fashion accessory company, Marusia Designs, supplying stores across Canada. To make ends meet I also owned and operated a small restaurant called The Recovery Room in Victoria, BC which was a creative venture in itself!
In 1984 I indulged myself and explored the media of watercolour...it had always been fascinating media for me.
Since I have been back in Vancouver one of my major painting projects is called "Mary into the Millenium". Inspiration comes from my personal reflection of Virgin Mary and the artistic and religious icon representations of her throughout time. In my contempory presentation of Mary I create her image using a mixed media and collage technique. It is a time-capsule effect. I am pleased with the wonderful response to the first two "Marys" that I received at the "Showcase 2000" in August at the Plaza of Nations In Vancouver, BC. The third "Mary" is now complete.
Visit my Art Gallery and take a look at samples of my work. Also, enjoy my whimsical artwork of my greeting cards as well! I have been very productive this winter with some large scale watercolour winter scenes and I am currently exploring the wonderful, whimsical world of Merry-Go-Round and Carousel ponies.
I now have 15 unique and magical PONIES in the series. I have continued to explore mixed media and have returned to acrylics to do some canvas pieces as well.
Email me at mmz@shaw.ca if you would like to discuss displaying my artwork. As you can see by the sampling displayed on this website I have a range of subjects and media and am also interested in individualized commissioned work as well. Hope to hear from you soon!!
