- David Shepherd
David Shepherd b. Jan-1734, in the stone house called "The Fort", Shepherdstown, Virginia, (now WV),
married 1756, Rachael Teague, daughter of Wm. And Isabella Teaque.
David d. 2-Feb-1795, at the Forks of Wheeling ,WV. He is buried in the grave-yard by the old stone church on Wheeling Creek, at Fort Shepherd, Forks of Wheeling, VA (now near Elm Grove,WV)
David Shepherd was the Commanding Officer of the Virginia Milita at Wheeling, WV and the Chief Magistrate of the first territoral court at Wheeling.His son William was killed while in battle with the Indians during the Seige of Fort Henry, 1-Sep- 1777.
David Shepherd received a warrant for 1063 acres of land under the King of Great Britain's proclamation of 1763, on March 25, 1774, located in the forks of Wheeling in Augusta Co., VA. This warrant was signed on March 18, 1784, by Gov. Benjamin Harrison.
David, son of
Thomas and Elizabeth, made an entry by Military Warrent in Ohio County,
Virginia on the Ohio River, opposite Middle Island Creek. This land is in the
southwest corner of present-day Marshall County. West Virginia. This was for
service in the Revolutionary War.
David left Shepherdstown in 1770 with his family and settled near Wheeling at the Forks of Big and Little Wheeling creek. At this location he built Shepherd's Fort and a block house, which was 6 miles distance from Fort Henry. The Indians attacked and burned Fort Shepherd on 27-Sep-1777.
In Order Book No. 4, p. 421, of the Circuit Court of Ohio county, VA is written; "The last will and testament of David Shepherd dec'd is proven in Court by William Flanahan and Wm. McIngher two of the subscribing witnesses and ordered to be recorded." This entry is dated Apr-7-1795. Letters of testimentary were granted to Moses Shepherd, one of the executors named in the will, with his giving bond in the sum of 3,000 pounds money. ref. The West Virginia Historical Magazine.
When David died, he left a son
Moses, and daughters; Elizabeth (wife of John Lee), Sarah (wife of Levi Springer),
Ruth (wife of John Mills) and granddaughter, Elizabeth (wife of Zephaniah
Beall) she being the sole heir of David's deceased son, William Shepherd, who
had been killed by the Indians during the siege of Fort Henry.
- William Shepherd b. 1758, d. 1-Sept -1777, at the seige of
Fort Henry. He was caught by the Indians surrounding the fort
as he made a dash to return to the fort. He was almost in the
gate when he was killed and scalped. He had a daughter who
became his sole heir. She was named Elizabeth and married
Zephaniah Beall.
William married Rebecca McCulloch, sister of Hugh McCulloch.

- Moses Shepherd, b. 11-Sep-1763, d. 29-Apr-1832, Forks of
Wheeling, WV,
married Mrs. Lydia Cruger, b. ca. 1765, d. 1867 at the age of 102, thirty-fives years after Moses died. The estate was sued by the heirs that numbered in the hundreds and included five generations of family claimants.
- Sarah Shepherd,
married 1st, ca. 1773, Francis Duke, b. 11-Feb-1751, Ballymoney, Ireland, was killed at the siege of Fort Henry, Forks of Wheeling, VA, 31-Aug-1-Sep-1777.
Francis was the son of John Duke, an early settler of Berkley Co., VA
Francis and Sarah lived at Beech Bottom, tweve miles below Wheeling, where a block house had been erected after the Indian troubles started. Francis was Commissary and in charge of the Fort. On receiving word of the attack on Fort Henry, Francis rushed to give aid at the fort but was shot by the Indians before he could reach the safety of the fort, but being so near, the Indians waited for darkness before dragging his body into a cabin and then scalped him and stripped his body.
