    Gideon was a tavern keeper at Stockbridge. His tavern sign is kept at the public library at Stockbridge. During the Revolutionary War, Gideon was observed carrying a plate of food into the woods and was charged by the authorities with aiding the "enemy", a hungry British soldier. He was taken to court and after swearing to support the revolution, he was released.

    He removed from Stockbridge, MA to Erie Co., PA, with his father in 1839, remaining there until 1844, when they went to Wood Co., VA. After his father died, Burt went to Ohio and then in April of 1851 he removed to Rome township, Jones Co., IA and then in 1853 to Hale township where he made his home on the north side of the Wapsipinicon River, west of the town of Hale, where he made his home until the 28th of March, 1889, when he moved to Olin, IA.
    Burt enlisted 12-Aug-1862, at Wyoming, IA, Company G, 31st Iowa Infanry and served during the Civil War. He was a member of the G.A.R. #130, Wyoming, IA.
