Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl add flour, baking powder, salt, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Cut the shortening into the dry ingredients with a fork, pastry blender or use your hands (like I do). Stir in the milk, a small bit at a time, adding just enough so that the dough rounds up and leaves the sides of the bowl. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out until it is 1/2" thick. Then with a 2 and 1/2" biscuit cutter, cut out the biscuits and place them on a greased baking sheet. Place them close together. Prick each biscuit with a fork a few times. Now with the dough that you have left over roll it into a single big square. Put the melted margarine all over it with a pastry brush. Make sure the 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon are mixed together real good. Then sprinkle this on top of the margarine. Roll the whole thing up jelly-roll style. Cut slices about 2" thick and place them on the baking sheet close together and bake them with the other biscuits. You can either save them for dessert since they are sweet or if you have a sweet tooth, you can have them right along with your meal with a little butter or margarine on top of them. Bake for 15 minutes. Take some of the melted margarine and brush on top of each biscuit and bake for another five minutes. |
