As a songwriter, Clayton draws from life experiences and growing up in southern Louisiana. His songs are honest and open, much like his personality. Clayton's first song, which he co-wrote with Victoria Johnson, "If You Can't Love Me Like This [Then Don't Love Me At All]" is one of which he is especially proud. Two other crowd pleasers are, "Most Folks Call Me Country" and "Heart So Strong." Clayton was born in Picayune, Mississippi, but grew up in Pearl River, Louisiana. Raised on gospel and country, some of his major influences from childhood were Roy Acuff, George Jones and Ricky Skaggs. His present influences are Alan Jackson and George Strait. His country roots are deep. When he was eleven, Clayton's father gave him his first guitar and taught him a few basic chords, he learned the rest on his own. He remembers the first song he learned to play was "Your Cheatin' Heart," by Hank Williams, Sr. Growing up, summers were spent in the peaceful atmosphere of the hardwooded swampland along the Pearl River. Family functions often involved food and music. Clayton remembers sitting under oak trees in his aunt's backyard having a guitar pull with his whole family. Clayton's first taste of Nashville came at the age of 22, when a friend, knowing his interest in country music, paid for a trip to Music City. "It was like a homecoming," Clayton recalls. Things he had only heard about as a child, while he and his grandfather listened to The Grand Ole Opry over the radio, were no longer imaginative; they became reality. From that day forward, Clayton has been researching the music industry full steam. |
His dream of becoming a songwriter is now a reality as he plows through the field of success. When it comes to his musical career and songwriting, Clayton Harper has a strong carefully planned foundation. With the hard work ethic and positive attitude, he has the framework for a lasting career as a songwriter. So sit back, and let his music sweep you away. |
