Wy Concert August 20, 1998
Oh my gosh!!! I had such a wonderful time at the concert for Wynonna at the Iowa State Fair on August 20, 1998. They almost brought down the house!! Literally! You will understand what I mean when I get to that part of the story. So sit back for this story I am about to tell. Sorry, this is going to be a long , but you just have got to hear this story. It was hot !!! With the humidity, the heat index was 106!!! It might have been higher , but at the last account I heard that is what it was. Everything was just sticking to everything!! The hazy was just hanging in the air. Also, according to our news station, the pollen count was the highest it has been it like years and years. So my allergies were going nuts!! We finally got out at the fair around 4ish... Man, it was hot out there. We didn't do a lot of walking around because it was so hot. We did sit outside the front of the Grandstand to watch a dance group and got to hear part of the sound check. Too kewl!!
They opened the gates to the concert at 7:00 p.m. We went in then so we could settled and rest. The first 100 people got free Sawyer Brown cups and I got one. I wanted just to look at the t-shirts and stuff that they were selling. I ended up getting 2!!!
There was a storm coming in. The weather people said that it would becoming, but though it would miss the fair grounds. It looked like most of it was going around us. They were nasty looking clouds too. There were some though coming at us. Three songs into Sawyer Brown's show the winds really started to pick up!!! It cooled it off, it start blowing so hard that knocked down one of the big screens!!!! It was hang on the top right hand of the stage. The wind blew it down and it was hanging there by the safe strap things, swinging. So the stopped the show for 3 to 5 minutes so they could take it down. They took all the other screens down too. Just to be on the safe side. But the show went on. But we could see the storm coming in. It was a little nerve racking watching the clouds. The clouds looking nasty. The wind died down some. Sawyer Brown was great. We danced and had a blast. During intermission the wind started to pick up. I really thought we were going to get poured on. Both Mom and I started to pray for it to go around us or to hold off. I really though that it was going to start lighten by the look of those clouds. If that would happen I was afraid they would call off the rest of the concert. It didn't though. Just as Wynonna came on stage the winds died down. She was sooo wonderful!!!!!! She had a the black outfit with platform shoes!! She looked great. Her hair was down. She was sooo Sassy too. She can on sing Wyld Unknown. During the show, she was harassing some cowboy, who got up in the middle of her singing. She pointed at him told this joke that was just hysterical. She said, "How many men does it take to change a roll of toilet paper? Nobody know, ‘cause its never happened!" She said it with such sassiness!! I lost it. She then pulled him up on stage and sang, "Don't you throw that Mojo on me" right in the poor guys face. Then she as he was heading off stage, I guess he's pants must of been sliding down a little ‘cause she told him to pull his pants all the way up. Then she noticed he had a pager and took it from him!!! It was so funny. Before she sang "The Other Side" She talked about life been hard and not letting it get you down and stuff. She make my mom and I cry. I have had some hard times here lately and it hit home to me. When She sang that song all the hair on my hairs stood up. I can't explain how that song just moves me. She also talked about Dreams and to follow your heart and not your head. I just loved it! Oh and she sang "What it Takes" and forgot the words to part of it and said whoops then started to laughed at herself. Before she sang "Come Some Rainy Day" She talked about her sister. I love that song too. For her encore song she sang "No One Else On Earth". They let people go up and stage at the edge of the stage. Actually, there is a wall between the stage just big enough for the Iowa State fair Security to sit and walk. People on the stage floor actually went running to the front. I went down there too. Was on the left side of the stage. I took a ton of pictures. I hope I got some good ones! I had so much fun. My feet were sore from dancing. To top it all off, it didn't start to rain until after the concert just as we were walking out of the Grandstand. Just as we got to the car it started to pour!!! We got 2 inches of it. You know, that is the second time that has happened to me at a Wynonna concert and never did. Its almost like God wouldn't dare rain on one of Wynonna's concerts. |
