BOOK REVIEW

The books that are posted have all been read by myself. They are rated on their readability, and historic correctness. I will grade them on by using Rebel Flags. One flag being the worst, and five being the best.

The Landscape Turned Red

By: Stephen W. Sears

This is an excellent Read! The Landscape Turned Red is a comprehensive novel, that covers the events leading up to, during and just after the Battle of Antietam, in Sharpsburg Maryland. The book flows very well, and is enjoyable to read. Mr. Sears has done an excellent job with this pivitol battle of the War.

From Manassas to Appomattox

By: General James Longstreet

This book is long and not easily read. It is my opinion that this book was written in defense of his Actions at Gettysburg. It is also my opinion that General Longstreet was an excellent Leader, and didn't need to defend his name anyway. Anyway, the book is choppy, and not reader friendly. He was a much better General than he was a writer.

Rebel--Copperhead--Battle Flag

By: Bernard Cornwell

While this is not just one book, it is a series. Mr. Cornwell, with is Starbuck series, has captured the true since of brother against brother. These books also show that it wasn't always easy to decide which side of the Mason-Dixon that a person belonged. Although this book is not historically correct, Cornwell took actual circumstances and laced his story with that. This makes for a very enjoyable series, and a must read.

Co. Aytch

By: Sam R. Watkins

This book is written by a Confederate Private, who fought in the Army of the Tennessee. He fought in many major battles during the war, to include, Shiloh, Chickamauga, Atlanta, Franklin, and Nashville. He wrote this book about 20 years after the War. It is an excellent book to learn the view of war, from someone who was in the trenches. But, it is also written in a dialect that is sometimes hard to understand. If you don't mind reading something slow, so you can understand all that is going on, it is a must read. You get a much different view of the Confederate Army from this book. Enjoy!

Terrible Swift Sword

By: Bruce Catton

This book is written by one of the most renowned writers of Civil War History. Terrible Swift Sword is written about how the War went from simpley stopping a rebellion, to the defense of humanity. It is easily read, and very informative. I feel it is a must have for any History lovers bookcase.

Reflections on the Civil War

By: Bruce Catton

This is the last book that Mr. Catton wrote, before his death. It was edited after his death. This is another excellent book, from a Pulitzer Prize winning author. It gives the reader a great insight into the lives and times of that era of time. I think this is my favorite Catton novel. Must read!

Shrouds of Glory

By: Winston Groom

This novel from the author of Forest Gump is a definate "must read". Shrouds of Glory follows the Army of the Tennessee, John Bell Hood, and others through the battles at Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville. In my opinion it is a much better book than Forest Gump. This is an excellent book, written by an excellent author. Buy it today!
