Hi Bill,
Thanks so very much for setting up the telephone
conservation for Shirley to talk to "The Master."
As I told Frank recently, I started playing
Eddy's music back when I was a kid and have enjoyed it ever since. It baffles
me as to why Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash were inducted before Eddy.
I'm not in any way suggesting that they don't deserve to be honored, but
in all fairness, Eddy has done far more -- and I'm going to use the term
"music" -- than both of them put together. I think most would agree
with my assessment.
Shirley is right on top of things here at
TIAC Radio and anything we can do to help get this man inducted, please
feel free and to not hesitate to let Shirley know.
Again, thanks so much!

Special Edition of The Florida Country Music
News
Eddy Arnold's Proposed Induction to The John
F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
I just got off the telephone from talking
to Eddy Arnold at his office in Brentwood, Tennessee. What a delightful
man!
The purpose of my call to Eddy was to let
him know of this special issue of the Florida Country Music News in asking
my subscribers to write or FAX their support letters for Eddy's name to
be added to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Other eminent country artists who have met
the specific criteria of contribution to their field and to society and
selected for this significant honor are Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash, and Willie
Nelson.
It is certainly now time for Eddy Arnold!
Quite frankly, it is a mystery to me how someone so distinguished in music
for half a century with a slate so spanking clean it is blinding has not
already been bestowed this honor. How has this man and all that he has
contributed to America's music been overlooked?
Eddy was very spry and cordial this morning
on the phone, and that great bear tone voice was as stable and steady as
ever with no hint of a man eighty-four years old! I asked Eddy how
he spends his days since his retirement and he replied in that laid-back
manner of his, "Why, I come into my office and work every day since my
retirement three years ago." Me being me, I got off on the deterioration
of country (and pop) music and the insipid stuff that is being played on
major radio today, but good-natured
Eddy only laughed and tactfully replied, "It is quite different now, isn't
it?" We had a most pleasant conversation and he was especially gracious
and expressed his gratitude to his Florida fans, "I want to thank you and
all your Florida readers very, very much for your support." Such
a humble, dear man!
Below is the letter that Zeke Thomas wrote
to James A. Johnson which, in my opinion, pretty well sums up Eddy Arnold.
Please write or FAX your support today to Mr. Johnson at the below address
or FAX number. You can say anything you want, but make your appeal TODAY.
Time is crucial.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Shirley Sheppard

Dear Mr. Johnson:
Eddy Arnold has been an institution in music
for over half a century. Deservedly, he has been awarded many honors throughout
his long career, some in the country music field and some in popular music.
I like to think of Eddy Arnold's music as
"Americana" without a label. During his prime years, which span from the
40's through the 90's, the fascination of his music appealed to a wide
range of music lovers. His talent as a singer was extraordinary and his
recordings simultaneously dominated country and popular radio airways for
several decades. He started out in an era when a singer had to have genuine
talent since there were no professional studio tools to correct off-key
singers as there are today. He spontaneously delivered a song with such
ease that it was almost like having a casual conversation with him. There
has never been a singer quite like Eddy Arnold.
Eddy Arnold's persona as a clean cut individual
has always been unquestionable. He treated his superiors, employees, peers,
and fans with equal respect. He never demanded "the star treatment" and
I sometimes got the impression that he was a little embarrassed about his
phenomenal fame. What you saw is what you got, a man of high integrity
who tried to live by the Golden Rule.
Eddy Arnold is a performer that America has
admired for over five decades. If anyone is deserving of the high honor
of having their name added to The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts, it is Eddy Arnold. I hope that you will give serious consideration
to his nomination.
Respectfully submitted,

Bruce,
It sounds like you may be describing a song
called "I've So Much To Be Thankful For". This was released as a single
in 1978, then re-recorded in 1993. That most recent recording (the
better one in my opinion) is on the Boxed set "EDDY ARNOLD, THEN &
NOW". You can still find it in some stores, or check out ebay. Good Luck,

HELP!!
January, 1950, my Mom missed an Eddy Arnold
concert she was scheduled to go see. Why? She had to go to
the hospital to give birth to the man writing this note. A radio
was placed beside her pillow and she was able to listen to Eddy sing.
Now Mom is 79 years old, and still loves Eddy. While on a visit to
her this week, she brought up a song by Eddy that she has heard only once
and didn't get the name of. Now she would like to have a copy of
that song, and I would dearly love to provide it for her. About all
she can remember about the lyrics is it contained a line similar to "twilight
years of my life." Can anyone out there come up with a name for this song
and help a son please his Mom?? Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks, Bruce
Bruce: Larry Risko has given you correct
information concerning this song. I will send you an email with the
song attached and you should be able to download it and play it on your
computer. This should suffice until you are able to find the song
on vinyl or Compact Disc. Bill Comer

Tulsa country station switches to talk
2002-05-21
By Mel Bracht
The Oklahoman
TULSA -- The sounds of country music have
given way to talk on Tulsa's legendary KVOO-AM 1170.
Last week, the 50,000-watt station, which
debuted in 1925, switched to a news-talk format and was renamed KFAQ by
its owners, Journal Broadcast Group.
But the call letters haven't gone away entirely.
They still can be found on the company's KVOO-FM 98.5, billed as "Tulsa's
True Country" with artists such as Alan Jackson and Martina McBride.
Although radio ratings for country music are
declining nationally, KVOO-AM had shown listenership growth since it began
emphasizing "classic country" two years ago, general manager Jay Werth
said. But he said the growth hadn't produced additional revenue.
"It was in the older demographics that overall
aren't as attractive to most marketers," Werth said.
After reaching its peak about 15 years ago,
the popularity of country music has sagged in recent years.
"The height of its popularity was in the '80s
to early '90s with the class of Randy Travis and George Strait, with Garth
Brooks shortly thereafter," Werth said. "It's fallen off a little bit since
then, although we've begun to see a bit of a resurgence."
When the format change was made, KVOO-AM ranked
second out of four country stations and fifth overall in the Tulsa market.
KVOO-FM 98.5 plays a variety of country, emphasizing
older music and its longtime shows on the weekends, Werth said.
Werth said the format change prompted about
40 telephone calls and an editorial cartoon in the Tulsa World.
"For a lot of people, this was a longtime
companion," Werth said. "Its call letters stood for country music."
Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, known as
the architects of Western swing, performed live on KVOO from Cain's Ballroom
in Tulsa.
The station also had been marketed as the
"voice of Oklahoma." In the evenings, it can be heard as far away as Arizona
and Montana.
KFAQ will battle KRMG-AM 740, Tulsa's second-ranked
station behind rock station KMOD FM-97.5, for talk listeners. The station
carries Fox News Channel personality Bill O'Reilly's show, which recently
launched on more than 200 stations, noon to 2 p.m.
Other national personalities include Glenn
Beck, 9 a.m. to noon; Michael Savage, 7 to 10 p.m.; and Laura Ingraham,
10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Michael Del Giorno, a former KRMG host, heads
the list of local personalities with his 3 to 6 p.m. show.
KRMG's national personalities include Dr.
Laura Schlesinger, 9 a.m. to noon, and Rush Limbaugh, 1 to 4 p.m.
KFAQ also carries sports, with University
of Oklahoma football and basketball games and Jenks High School football
games.

Eddy Arnold is a classic performer! I went
to a concert in Fort Worth in the 60's and he kept getting a standing ovation!
He belongs with Tennessee Ernie Ford, Hank Snow, Bob Wills, Marty Robbins,
Conway, Hank Williams, W.Jennings and all the other wonderful singers I
grew up listening to! I dislike this "new breed" of C/W singers---they
all sound alike---a bunch of vanilla clones! Give me the "Old Time" C/W
performers, just like "Old Time Religion"----I never grow tired of listening
to men of Eddy's caliber!

Subject: Belated Birthday Greetings.
Dear Bill and hopefully Eddy will be aware
of this message.
A belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EDDY and wish you
many ++++++more wonderful years to celebrate. The web site is delightful
to view and thoroughly enjoy looking at the pictures and reading through.
I must say, this fan goes back many years,
during the 40's when my father brought home a 78 record with Cattle Call
on it. We had a wind up gramophone and I think I must have worn out
the record. My father's treat was to bring home a record when he
could afford it. He used to cut wood in the bush, skid it up on a
pile, cut it with a circular saw, through it on the truck and drive from
Markstay to Sudbury, Ontario. He would likely get about $25.00 for
the whole load of wood. He would be lucky if he would have two loads
in a week. Many times I helped him skid the wood with the horse and
threw back many blocks of wood from the saw.
It was a lot of work, but in those times,
I feel I am very wealthy, not in a monetary way, but we were taught all
the basics of life including respect and those valuable assets of helped
me along the way.
Today I have two recordings that get airplay,
my latest, Should I Cross The Line, includes l4 songs, all of which have
received airplay. So I am blessed to be a part of the family of Country
Music and all the DJ's have been wonderful.
All the best to you and your family Eddy and
may God's Richest Blessings always be with you
I thank you Bill for passing this message
along to Mr. Arnold. (I, too, also signed recently for the induction).

Subject: Telephones
Dear Bill,
I just read your post regarding the telephone
calls people should make.
There is one problem. One telephone
listing for the Kennedy Center is for ticket information. The second,
or general telephone number is answered by a person who really is not into
to it (my experience). I am affraid the calls would fall on deaf
ears. She can only lead you to someone and it would not be Johnson.
More than likely, it would be the Press Office. I would not like
to get them up tight as they have been cooperating with me in getting key
faxes to Johnson's office or as they tell me. I can only believe
what they say. Of course I have not inundated them.
Calling the Senators and Congressman is another
thing. That would be OK. I will email the current list of those
who have supported Eddy to all of those on my email list. I have
attached the same info for you in a file above. You might want to
keep a running tally on your site of these people.
I have Nancy contacting those Tennessee congressmen
who have not responded. I believe it is their duty to support Eddy.
She will point that out to them.
There are key political people on the Kennedy
Center Board of Trustees. They make the decision. I will mail you the list
and their telephones and faxes. You might also want to include this
on your site. The problem is that the Congresspeople move for their
own constituents. I have asked my mailing list to contact there congressman
in the past and let me know the results. I got back about 4 answers
and these are people who love Eddy
There are also 100 who are Trustees but not
politicos. I have mailed each a letter in the past month. Whether
they receive it is another story.
Beyond the above, I do not think we can do
much more.
As far as anti-Arnold people I do not think
the amount of negative input from them amounts to a hill of beans.
We have secured key people in our efforts and it took many months.
The average negative fan might send a letter which will take 3-4 weeks
to get there and when it gets there it will be handled by a legislative
clerk. You will not see the thousands like we have had sent.
Your Eddy Arnold friend,
Frank
Frank: You make an excellent point
and I agree with you. Fans, let's not make telephone calls to the
JFK Center. We don't want to rock the boat. Frank has a good relationship
with these people and we may disrupt that
by calling them. Frank, our confidence
is in you as you have headed this crusade in a very professional and effective
manner. I am confident that due to your efforts and other fans that
Eddy will receive this award in 2002.

TO ALL EDDY ARNOLD FANS !!!
I wasn't going to comment of this slight...
said about Eddy Arnold. Sometimes some people need attention and find this
a good way to get it. I guess by me, and my fellow Eddy Arnold friends
commenting on this, will give him his day in the sun. Every one has his/her
right to their opinion , so maybe Bill Comer is right in placing this negative
comment on these pages. For some one to state... they are a Fan of "His"
music...and go on to state that he is a Legend of Country Music. Then go
on and try to belittle him in his next breath. Is very contradictory to
say the least. This web page is done in a very professional manner for
one of the most decent Country artist to ever sing a note. Dr. Eddy Arnold
is a credit to this or any other profession you could think of. To think
Eddy would shake your hand and sign his name for you...even after reading
what you said about him. Far exceeds negative things said by one
individual such as you. I think.... the many thousand's of guest book signers,
who have signed these pages and had nothing but praise for Eddy. Proves
what a great person he really is. We will give you your day in the limelight....enjoy.!!!

action that would have caused you to remove it. I just feel what I said;
needed to be said. I like to have fainted when i saw what that idiot wrote.

I agree with both Jerry and Frank, however
I must leave this comment on the guestbook as a wake up call to all of
Eddy's fans that the battle is not yet won. We don't know how many
other people have contacted the JFK Center to oppose Eddy receiving this
award. We now know that from this moment on we must be relentless
in our efforts to have Eddy receive this honor which should have been given
to him many years ago. This guy has done us a favor because we now know
that there are people opposed to Eddy and therefore we must persevere.
We must start a telephone campaign and call
our senators and congressman and ask their assistance in seeing that Eddy
receive this honor. We must make telephone calls to the JFK Center
and let them know how we feel. We don't know the strength of the
enemy so we must charge ahead at full steam. We cannot take the position
that we are going to upset the people at the Center by blasting them with
telephone calls as long as we approach them with respect and simply let
them know the strength of our resolve in achieving this goal for Eddy.
Bill Shoop and I have wondered for years why
Eddy has never received this award. Maybe we had not realized that
Eddy has opposition to his being honored. It never occurred to me
before now that there could be people just as determined that Eddy will
not
receive this award as we have been determined that he will
receive it..
The final decision on this matter should
be made by Frank. He is our leader in this endeavor and we should
do what he recommends. Frank, please let us know if we should start
the telephone assault or continue on the path you've taken us on thus far.

I agree with you. The sad part is that
people do not let it be known who they are plus they go on hear say.
This person should live in New York City or any major city.
On a personal basis, I had an Eddy Arnold
fan complain about endorsing Eddy for the Honors due to our inclusion of
Bill Clifton's name on the petition. The person realized the error
of their ways when the reason was pointed out.
I had another email from someone requesting
me to take this person's email off my "list".
Another said I had the wrong email address
as there was no James A. Johnson there.
I wonder at their "fandom"
Che Sara, I say.
As far as the Kennedy Center gripe, I doubt
very much that any contact with them is possible at this time. I
believe the thousands of letters they have received more than outweigh
one one negative comment.
Thanks for your help, Jerry

hello mr. arnold. Many years ago (around 1959)
my mother and father would listen to your records on our player and "I
became hooked"!! oh sure i listened to haley mills, 4 seasons and others
but i would put your records back on and learn those great words from your
great songs. I would take a break and listen to floyd cramer but turn around
and put that Eddy Arnold record back on. many years later my dad gave me
his records that he used to listen to and they were ALL Eddy Arnold's !!
I was given a series of records from a good friend years ago and to this
day (mostly on Sunday) I will put YOUR records on and as they say "crank
it up"!!! I had the great pleasure of seeing you Eddy at the Front Row
theater in Cleveland. Ohio back many years ago, sitting just a few rows
from the revolving stage and sitting back, listening, seeing and enjoying
the man that i grew up with on the LP record player. What a wonderful evening
that was for me. So, I just want to say THANK YOU Mr. Eddy Arnold for so,
so, so many wonderful, enjoyable, relaxing, and loving times. The funny
think about these times is that I'm really not a country music type of
person but YOU sure have made it possible for me to learn your words to
Your songs and they have help me so much through my 52 years. Thanks again
Eddy, God Bless You !!! A friend from the record player from many many
years ago..

I'm sorry I typed Eddie instead of "Eddy."
However it doesn't change how I feel about this remarkable man. When I
first learned that my uncle was going to die from Lukemia I recorded several
songs of Eddy's for him to listen to, for comfort. (Sorry I probably will
get in trouble for that.) But Eddy reminded me of my uncle, a real gentleman.
I wanted my uncle to know how I felt about him by comparing him to someone
I knew that he admired and respected before he passed on. Would I recommend
Eddy to receive the arts award? More than any artist I know, without a
doubt!
