Don Stewart echoes my exact thoughts!!ITs just pathetic that CMT would not even tell us how they make their selections. Its obivious they are only trying to hype the younget acts.No respect at all for history and the simple truth.I could do the same thing but it doesnt mean it correct.Only my personal views.Which can be like the changing tides!!
Eddy Arnold has always been a singer of great no make that incredible love songs.Even the ones that never charted are superior to much of the throw away singles released today.Good music stands the test of time.Mr.Arnolds music one day will be looked upon for its content.
CMT get you act together or just tell the audience what your real motives are.Maybe the younger listeners cant comprehend what you are attempting. But for those of us over 40 we see straight to your core agenda!!

Subject: EDDY ARNOLD
If you can't even mention Eddy Arnold in you Greatest love songs......your staff needs to do a little more homework. Your using people who when asked, "What about Eddy Arnold?'' Answer Eddy ....who? Just shows you these young whipper snappers don't know what their talking about. They are only listening to the current songs...by current artists.
This is like saying God Bless America...sung by Kate Smith, isn't a Great love song for this great Nation of ours. The reason being... the ones picking the Greatest love songs weren't even born when Eddy Arnold recorded most of his 1,107 songs. My suggestion in to get older and more mature song critics, who truly know what a love song is. Try listing to Eddy Arnold sing "Can I Put You In A Love Song"...."I Can't Stop Loving You"..."They Don't Make Love Like They Use To'. Please don't forget to listen to "Bouquet Of Roses" that is surely a love song. This song alone was on the Billboard Charts for a record setting 54 straight weeks. It is time your Staff woke up and smelt the roses........the whole "Bouquet"....pardon the pun. Don Stewart

Charles made an unprecedented musical foray after leaving Atlantic and signing with ABC-Paramount, applying his soulful style to songs by Hank Williams, Don Gibson, EDDY ARNOLD and other country songwriters on "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music”

Dear Friends,
I guess it dosent make a whole lots of difference to a 'True Eddy Arnold Fan'; one who is Educated and has an Understanding of his Career and Accomplishments.
But once again a "Bunch Of Educated Fools" has shunned him; at the nameing of CMTs Top All Time 100 Love Songs. Of the Top 12, Mr. Arnold was not recognized??.
I may be wrong but I thought he Set The Standard for 'Country Love Songs'. Please correct me if I am wrong. I wonder where they find these folks that make up those charts?. Jerry L. Vandiver

Bob, The song is called "Cowboy", and Is featured on an album from about 1976. The album as I recall is just titled "Eddy Arnold, featuring Cowboy". But I could be wrong about that. Any help out there? Anyway, you may find it on ebay. Perhaps someone knows of another collection where that song may appear. Good luck.

"Willimason County Review
lanners’ agenda draws large crowd, little fanfare
By STEPHEN HINES / Review Appeal Staff Reporter
Milton Grief kept wondering out loud what had brought out such a large crowd to the Monday meeting of the Brentwood Planning Commission.
The consent agenda of six items passed largely without comment. There was no controversy about extending a flagpole at Tractor Supply by 10 feet, to adding a sign to McGavock Farms, nor to approving the final plat to several pieces of property.
The regular agenda was similarly without controversy, although country music legend EDDY ARNOLD complained mightily and loudly that he couldn’t hear discussions that approved the preliminary plans for the Wynstone Falls development.
“You need to do something about the sound system in here (the Municipal Center). You can’t hear a thing that is being said,” he asserted.
Once ARNOLD and his friends did leave the room, they stopped in the hallway and talked so loudly it did become difficult to hear what commissioners were saying."

I wore out a 8 track tape in 1974 of Eddy Arnolds greatest hits when I was in high school. My fellow classmates laughed at me for listening to country music, but I did not pay any attention to them. I figured I was richer for it. Mr. Arnold deserves nothing but the very best this nation can give him. He is truly an American giant, how many stars would put their careers on hold today to care for son? I doubt not many, but Mr. Arnold did for his son. That to me speaks volumnes about this great man. I just wish I could have the honor and privilege to meet Mr. Arnold. Because in my book he is simply the best friend country music ever had. Thank you

How I wish I could be in Paragould, AR on June 4. Since the late 1940s I have listened to, admired and loved the music of Eddy Arnold. One ambition in life is to see him. Both of us are getting older. Still, I hope to "run into him" in Brentwood one of these days.
His songs touch the heart. As a little boy with puppy love crushes on some sweet girl it seemed that his songs were expressing the sentiments of my heart. Things did not change as I got older.

Hello all !
On the 29th of May this year, my wife and I were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. My eldest son contacted Eddy's Office with the hope of obtaining an autographed photo of Eddy. During the celebration that ensued, he offered us a wonderful recent photo of Eddy accompanied with a very personal message.
That was the best part of our evening celebration.
Thanks to my son Roger and to Eddy Arnold who so willingly accepted to partake in our celebration by virtue of a very generous and simple gesture, typical of this great gentleman that he always was.
God bless him and his family.

I have been a fan of Eddy Arnold since I was a little boy, I'm 42 now, when my parents and aunts and uncles would all be on vacation together down in Arkansas and that was all they would play in the cassette players.
My mother passed away back in 1975, and whenever I hear one of Mr. Arnolds songs come on the radio, it takes me back to Arkansas and those 3 or 4 summers we all spent down there. It makes me smile and think about my momma and her smiling face. Thank you Mr. Arnold for brightening up my days now and again.

Herbert’s Bar-B-Q closing Sunday
By CLINT CONFEHR / Review Appeal Senior Staff Reporter
A Franklin landmark is closing Sunday because the city is buying it to widen North Royal Oaks Boulevard, but there’s an 80 percent chance Herbert’s Bar-B-Q Restaurant will reopen nearby in six to 18 months, the owner said Wednesday.
“It’s a sad day,” said Nickel, who’s taking his tea-man talent to Wings to Go in Alexander Plaza. “It’s like ‘Cheers,’ where everybody knows your name.”
Country music stars’ autographs grace photos and memorabilia on the walls, but a guitar signed by Eddy Arnold was taken by a longtime friend of Wilson Herbert.
“The memorabilia is owned by the heirs of Mr. Herbert,” Matthews said. “When I bought the restaurant ... he did not want to sell things that were given to him as gifts ... so I was allowed to use them for the life of Herbert’s at this location.

In 1990 My mother & I went to a concert of Eddy Arnolds @ the Music Hall in Kansas City MO. We've both been fans since the 1st note we heard him sing (mother so many years before me!)-Mother wasn't able to go backstage after the concert w/me as sh couldn't climb the stairs but nothing could stop me & my camera. One of the disc jockeys from our mail country music station (WDAF-61 Country AM at that time) was gracious enough to use my camera after we asked Eddy if He would pose for a picture for me. I've treasured it for many years & finally sometime ago, I sent it to Dr Arnold requesting he autograph it so my mother in the nursing home could look @ it every day. I finally received it back in the mail a couple of weeks ago & I'm so very grateful to be able to share it with mom. She's 92 & smiles everytime someone asks her about the picture. Just another testimony to Eddy Arnolds gracious spirit & respect for his fans. And thank you so much for this access to let the world know how much we all tryly love him--Sincerely, Carleta Riley-Kansas City, MO

I can't begin to tell you the pleasure that Eddy Arnold's music has brought to my husband, Bob, myself, and our four children over the years. Our children are adults now and have children of their own, but when they were young, my husband would sit them all on the couch and have them listen to Eddy's records. He wanted to introduce them to his beautiful voice so that they would know who Eddy Arnold was over the years. We will be married 50 years in 2005 and to this day, our children will call us from wherever they are to let us know that they are listening to an Eddy Arnold song on the radio or see him on tv. They still remember and know how much we enjoy his music. We were living in New Jersey from 1955 to 1969. The first time we had the pleasure of seeing Eddy in concert was at Convention Center in Atlantic City, N.J. It was such a thrill for us. Then we saw him in Asbury Park, N.J. and I'm so happy to say that we were at his Carnegie Hall performance. He is still such a big part of our lives even though he doesn't know it. We wish him the best on his 86th birthday. He is a wonderful person and a great artist. There will never be another Eddy! Love, Millie

My son, Don Kane, was Eddy's bass player for three years and my wife and I were priviledged to meet Eddy during that time. A number of times in subsequent years we would attend one of Eddy's shows and he would invite us into his dressing room or have him join him for a snack after the show.
In 1999 we were in Las Vegas for a WW2 reunion and saw that Eddy was playing in town. We were lucky enough to get tickets for his last public performance on May 16, 1999. Eddy Arnold- A true southern gentleman.

I recall "Any Time" was a huge hit before anybody ever heard of Eddy Fisher. The only other artist slighted as badly as Eddy is Bob Wills - by almost everybody, especially Nashville! Other great singers better than George Jones were George Morgan, Lefty Frizzell, Gene Autry and I even like Floyd Tillman better than Jones. It's just the latter day group of writers prefers rock-a-billy twangy grunts to GOOD voices singing truly super songs. "Thanks so much for listening, be good everybody!" - Charlie

To answer your question....YES !!! there is a place to check all the songs Eddy ever recorded. Please go down left side of main page to "EDDY ARNOLD DISCOGRAPHIES". Click on this site....in box that opens you might want to start at the top. It lists Alphabetical listings of all his songs. Just click on different letters of the alphabet...to bring up the listings of all songs he recorded under that "Letter" of the alphabet. Plus you can click on the numerous listings of albums, 33 1/3" records, 45" records, and 78" records...etc. There is a complete listing of all his songs in this segment of his Discograhires of recorded songs....all 1,107 of them Thanks for asking !!!.......Don Stewart

As reported by kait8 TV
MAY 3, 2004 - Posted at 2:25 p.m. CDT
PARAGOULD, AR - Country music legend Eddy Arnold and Lightyear recording artist Dan Seals will headline an evening of music and entertainment at Arkansas State University's Fowler Center on June 4. Dubbed the first-ever "Eddy Arnold Evening for Children," the event will benefit the Paragould-based Children's Homes, Inc.
Joining Arnold and Seals will be Nashville-based entertainers and songwriters with Region 8 roots, Johnny Tolley of Blytheville and Jonesboro native and songwriter Jim Brown.
Arnold is probably best known for his hits like "Cattle Call" and "Make the World Go Away." Seals' hits include "Meet Me in Montana," a duet with Marie Osmond, and "One Friend." In the mid to late 1980s, Seals had a string of nine consecutive #1 songs on the country music charts. Jim Brown has toured and recorded with Marie Osmond, and also written songs for several country artists, including a #1 hit for Alan Jackson.

The following excerpt is from the history of The Tennessean’s Three-Star Forum Banquet written by Frank Ritter. It was published May 14, 1989 in advance of the 50th annual banquet.
"Eddy Arnold sang hillbilly
In the early days, there were no chief speakers. Instead, newspaper executives would make brief remarks, then open up the banquet program to the letter writers.
The first time they had a principal speaker was 1947, when Dr. J.E. Windrow, director of Peabody Demonstration School (now University School of Nashville), delivered an address on education.
For entertainment that year, they featured Eddy Arnold, whose career was just beginning to bloom (organ music had been standard entertainment before). Arnold sang " hillbilly songs and Western ballads, " The Tennessean reported.
After 1947, they only occasionally had principale speakers (Estes Kefauver, who later would seek the U.S. presidency, appeared in 1950 while junior senator from Tennessee). Since the late 1950s, however, they have always had someone — sometimes, several someones — to address the banquet. An exception was 1966 when they showed a movie filmed in Nashville and featuring The Tennessean, designed to attract young people to journalism."

Accolades are not enough to honor Eddy for the pleasure and happiness he brought to millions with his talent. My wife Milbra and I had the pleasure of attending many concerts, with I think the ultimate at Carnegie Hall. At the conclusion of the last curtain call he sang Molly Darlin', after which he sat on his stool with a look of contemplation. I've always wondered what he was thinking. Would love to know.

I grew up on the outskirts of Mount Airy, where I listened to our first radio station, WPAQ, built in 1948,(I was born in 1946),so I grew up with country music. WPAQ always had live entertainment in their studio almost everyday. Eddy Arnold was among some of the first celebrities I ever heard, along with Frank, the California Kid, Bill Monroe, Louvin Bros. and more. I developed a love for Bluegrass gospel from this station and it's stars who passed through. I now have a gospel group organized about four years ago, called "Just Us" We're not too well-known, but we love the Lord, and love to sing the gospel. As I said, groups like Eddy Arnold and his band were instrumental in forming several groups in this area!
May God continue in leading country singers in their choices of songs to record!

Got up at around 9:30 am turned the tv onto 'The Western Channel' as I always do; and guess what movie came on at 10:05 am. No other than [Mr. Eddy Arnold] in the 1950 production of 'Hoedown' Mr. Arnold had his Big Jumbo 200 Blond Gibson in it; with his name on the neck and when the movie went off he was singing 'Just A Little Loving'. Very sad to say I didnt know it was coming on and didnt have my VHS recorder set up. Bad Me. Maybe it will be on again. In the movie he also does some squaredance calling. Well, Thank you all and Please Keep Mr. Bill and our Servicemen and Ladys in Your Prayers. Your [Eddy Arnold Friend] Jerry Vandiver & Family

Dear Bill:
Great list.
I think Eddy's very first show was the summer replacement for Perry Como on CBS. The sponsor was Chesterfield cigarettes. It was on aound dinner time and I think it ran 15 minutes.
In those early days there were many 15 minute shows and TV actually went off the the air around midnight.

Milton Berle Show-guest in the 50s
Kraft Music Hall-County Fair-show 5 0f 6-
Of special note Eddy was on the Dean Martin show alongside Dean and Frank Sinatra.I never saw the show but that should tell those who arent familar with what a huge talent Eddy is!!I believe he sang with them.
I am sure there are dozens of other shows he did.But the fact that he hosted over 20 network tv shows says a lot about just what an incredible artist performer he was.Nobody comes close. If an artist like Eddy came along today he would blow them away talent wise and sales wise.I think it was Harold Bradley,I may be mistaken who once put an old Eddy recording alongside a new artist. He was trying to show Eddy had a terrific talent voice that holds its own no matter against what talent or decade!!!
I also just remembered he did many CMA shows and the Academy of Country Music specials. Also had his own network tv show on all three networks at variuos times in the 50s.Chet Atkins was the musical director on at least one of them.
If anybody knows of shows I missed please list them.

As I grew older as long as I had Eddy, I had Dad and I too became a great fan of his! Along with Dad's favorites, I added my own. Here comes heaven( which did and does now remind me of my wife of 35 years) and Tips of my fingers. Thank you for making the world a brighter happier place. Your are one of God's blessing. I first remember hearing Eddy Arnold on my mothers stereo when I was ten years old. Not being into music, the songs played over and over became ingrained in my brain. It was only years later that I learned why she played so much Eddy Arnold. At the time she and my father were divorcing, he was not home, and Eddy's uplifting songs of love and inspiration helped offset the depression and failure she was feeling about the marriage. As I grew to love country music, Eddy, along with Sonny James became my favorites. Now I do endless hours of aerobic exercise on treadmills and bikes, and it's listening to my Eddy Arnold collection that helps me get through it all. Thank you Eddy for making the planet a more enjoyable place.

I just wanted to thank Mr. Arnold for being such a big part of so many peoples lives. I am the youngest of 7 children and Eddy Arnold is such a big part of our childhood. When we were growing up, my parents would take all of us kids, and the dog camping. My dad would pop in the 8 track of Eddy Arnold and we would sing our hearts out. There is one song that I can't seem to find ANYWHERE, I don't know, maybe I have the name wrong, but I think it is called "I'm a good boy". I would sing that song to my father while he was driving the camper, and I would look up at him and smile, with out teeth, and sing "I'm a good boy". He would just laugh and laugh. The funny thing is, I'm his youngest daughter, 6 girls and 1 son. 10 years ago, when I got married, that was the song Dad and I danced to. Well Dad is 70 years old now and I would really love to give him that CD. If anyone knows how I could get a hold of the correct name of that song, and a name of the CD that it is on please contact me via email and in the subject please put Eddy Arnold.
Thank you, and a big Thank you or Mr. Eddy Arnold for being such a great memory in a family of 9 (with a dog)
Sincerely,
Merse Fletcher

I HAVE been a fan of Eddy Arnold since the 1940's. I've worn out at least a half dozen copies of Cattle Call. He appeared at the old Roanoke Theatre in the 40,s and a few years ago here in Charlotte. His voice is a gift beyond description. Few singers can match his style and grace. I recently received a copy of his recording of " Loving her was easier than anything I'll ever do again." Fantastic!!!

I first heard Eddy Arnold when I was in the 8th grade in 1946. I thought I had died and gone to heaven because I had never heard such wonderful voice before. From then on I bought every record and songbook Eddy Arnold put out. I not only loved his singing, but I have always admired his life, also. He has always been a great role model. I love a "loving family man" and that's exactly what Eddy has been all of these years. I'll never forget seeing Eddy in concert in the Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio, Texas (the year escapes me, but sometime in the 50's, I think). I was able to go back stage and in my possession I had a picture of Eddy's house with the words "Merry Christmas From the Eddy Arnold's" written in the snow in the yard of that picture. I will always be so grateful that Eddy signed that picture for me. I still treasure it and always will. When I asked him for his autograph on it, he asked me where I got it. I belonged to his Fan Club and Corine Pilcher, the president of the club asked me if I would be Eddy Arnold's "Texas Representative" of his club. Of course, I was so honored and said "YES"!!! I really enjoyed those years. I still have my membership card from back then. And THAT'S where I got that picture Eddy signed for me. He is a wonderful man and my all-time favorite singer. Eddy Arnold has and always will have a place in my heart. After all...he was my first love.

Eva:  Thank you for sharing this emotional story with us Eddy Arnold fans.  He is truly a role model and my four children and my grandchildren have listened to Eddy since they were born.  His melodious voice is second to none.  Bill Comer

Many years ago as a young teen age boy, I came home from school one day and turned on our old worn out RCA radio just to see what was on. To my surprise I heard someone I'd never heard before. It was a guy named Eddy Arnold. Immediately he became my favorite singer, even though I'd heard all the others, and liked many of them. Through the years he grew more and more my favorite. For many years he was my total musical hero. Now as I am 70 years old I realize that he is not only my favorite singer, he is much more than that. He is a person that I am so proud to be living at the same time with. It would be a shame to not know this man's greatness, not only in music but also in his life in general. It is such a sad thing nowadays that so very few people really know what a jewel this man is.  It is also so pitifully sad that the people who supposed to honor the greats of our time have no idea who the greats really are. Sadly most of those honored as greats nowadays wouldn't wouldn't make a pimple on Eddy Arnold's butt. We who know of him get angry with those who overlook when him the awards time come, but it is those who are losers, not us.

PLEASE READ HOW HE IS DOING IN HIS STATEMENT TO ME BELOW. THE LORIANNE AND JIM HE SPEAKS OF IS LORIANNE CROOK AND HER HUSBAND JIM. LORIANNE IS FROM "CROOK AND CHASE SHOW". AS ED TOLD ME SHE HAS BEEN COOKING HIM GOOD HEALTHY MEALS EVERY DAY.
Don,
I went to the cardiologist today and received a good report from my cardiologist.
They gave me the before and after photos of my heart so I could see how blocked the graph was.
I attached them to this e-mail so you could see how lucky that I am to still be alive.
I am getting stronger each day, and hopefully will be recovered by next week.
Jim and Lorianne and I went out to dinner tonight and we talked with Eddy and Sally they were at the same restaurant.
We got to speak with them briefly, they seem to be doing quite well.
Eddy is having a hard time hearing these days, even though he has a hearing aid.
However, he was his jolly old self and having fun with some children that were sitting at a table next to him...
Warm regards,
Ed

Don:  Thank you for giving us the update on Ed's recovery.  Please let him know that we are all praying for him.  Bill Comer

They bring comfort to the unstable condition of our country. There's a few new generation singers today that will be listened to and remembered as much in the future as has Eddy Arnold endured.

I have been a fan of Eddy Arnold probably since before I could walk. I remember seeing him for the first time in concert at the age of 3. I also remember the people sitting in front of us turning around and asking my mother to keep her daughter quiet (I must have been singing along a little too loud). My dad was a truck driver and when our family went with him on trips cross country we'd listen to Eddy Arnold 8 tracks tapes for hours on end. I believe he is the greatest country singer of all time. His music will stay with me forever.

There's a great picture of Eddy Arnold and Sonny James together on Sonny's official website www.sonny-james.com, this under the 80s and beyond
section.  They are pictured with their wifes.  Its high time Sonny was elected to the Hall Of Fame.  Yesterday, I called and talked with legendary dj
and grammy award winning songwriter BIll Mack.  He agreed and said it was long overdue.  Sonny still holds the record for most number ones in a
row by a single country act.  Alabama holds it for a group. Bill Mack also stated that Sonny was one of those people that everybody spoke well of.  I
asked why Sonny retired to which Bill said that he had invested wisely and wanted to spend time with his wife.  Sonny retired in 83.  I love Eddy
Arnold but Sonny comes very close to my admiration of Eddy.  Both extremely talented and honorable men.

I am 71 years old. As a young boy in the 1940's in Pine Bluff, Ark., I delivered the Arkansas Gazette early every morning. I would roll my papers
quickly, go to an all night cafe in Pine Bluff, and put nickel after nickel in the juke box, playing Eddy's records. Especially "I'll Hold You in My
Heart". I still hold the greatest voice I have ever heard in my heart...Eddy Arnold. Eddy, I hope you are doing well. I still listen to you, and my three
grown children also love Eddy Arnold. I teach music at the Southwest School of Bible Studies in Austin. I also am the regular song director for the
Southwest Church of Christ in Austin. I love to sing, and Eddy, I owe it all to you. I can't even picture an Angel with as beautiful a voice as the
beloved Eddy Arnold. Eddy..I love you as a man loves a brother.....Bill Reed, Austin, Texas

Subject: Heart Attack
Don,
I just returned home from the hospital. I had a serious heart attack in the night on Wednesday.
I was very fortunate to survive it , but lucky the 911 folks made it to my house in about 6 minutes and got me to the hospital in time to save my life.
I was told only 30 percent that are in that situation ever get to the hospital in time to save their lives most die before they can get them to the
hospital and stabilized.
I am very weak and not able to write much at this time, however, I just wanted you to get a quick update that I am still around and hope to recover in
a few weeks without any complications.
ED

Ed:  You are in Don and my prayers for a speedy recovery.  I am confident that all the visitors to this site will also pray for you.  Bill Comer

I have been collecting country music for nearly forty years, and have quite a few Eddy Arnold LPs and CDs (including the Bear Family and Proper
boxed CD sets). Eddy is one of the greatest -- great voice, excellent song choice and the impeccable steel guitar of Little Roy Wiggins. I used to
co-host a country music radio program, and one time we featured an Eddy Arnold special, with country songs from his early days. Response was
excellent. Keep up the great work with this web site. Regards from Australia.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE JUST GETTING TO KNOW EDDY ARNOLD
It's a long way from a farm in West Tennessee to Carnegie Hall, but singer Eddy Arnold has traveled that road and with great success. His has been
an exemplary career second to none in the country music field. Since his first recording for Bluebird and RCA Victor in the 1940's Arnold has sold
more than 85 million records and netted 145 Billboard chat singles.
An astounding 38 of these cuts also charted in the pop field. His network radio show in the 1940's took country music into millions of homes from
coast to coast, thus expanding country's audience beyond the boundaries of the rural Southwest. People who "don't even like country music" have
found it in their hearts to like Eddy Arnold.
His easy going demeanor and choice of well-written material have appealed to a great many folks. Today, Arnold remains one of country's most
beloved performers. He's also a highly astute businessman who has amassed a sizable fortune with several millions of dollars.
country.com recently had the opportunity to visit with the legendary singer at his office just south of Nashville. The wood-paneled walls are lined with
framed photos, industry awards and countless mementos of a most remarkable career. Cassette tapes and magazines obscure the top of his massive
desk.
The day of the interview Arnold was seated on the sofa amidst several stacks of 8 x 10 glossy photos awaiting his signature. Arnold’s long-time
assistant, Roberta, types away in the next room and fields phone calls. Now, nearing 80, Arnold still drives to the office almost daily to oversee
business.
The soft-spoken gentlemen admits that slowing down is on his mind these days, but judging by his recent schedule, one wonders just when he plans to
do so. Arnold recently completed a five-day, sold out run in Las Vegas. And he also contributed extensively to the two biographies of his life
published earlier this year.
He’s been at work in the recording studio as well. He recently sang with fellow country artists Steve Wariner and Jean Shepard for Bill Anderson’s
forthcoming project, and he’s recorded a new Christmas album for Curb Records entitled Christmas Time. This past August, Arnold spent several
days at the TNN Studios taping his Christmas special, Christmas Time with Eddy Arnold. The program airs Wednesday, December 10th at 8:00 p.m.,
Eastern on TNN, and Arnold’s guests include LeAnn Rimes and Faith Hill.
During the course of his fifty-plus year career, Arnold has witnessed many changes in country music and has wrought some of those changes himself.
Let’s revisit the career of country’s most successful recording artist.
Born May 15, 1918, Arnold grew up about 100 miles southwest of Nashville near Henderson, Tennessee. Times were difficult for the Arnold family
as they tried to eek out a meager living on the family farm. Just as the Great Depression hit, Arnold, then age 11, was faced with the death of his
father. Arnold was soon forced to quit school in order to help support his family. Any aspirations he had about leaving the farm were quickly dashed.
Says Arnold, "I figured I’d do hard labor all my life."
But Arnold did eventually manage to get off the farm. He had been playing the guitar since the age of ten. Initially it was for local square dances but
eventually he landed a spot on a Jackson, Tennessee radio station. From there he went to St. Louis and eventually on to WMPS Radio in Memphis.
By the outbreak of World War II, Arnold was working with fellow Country Music Hall of Famer Pee Wee King, then a popular Grand Ole Opry
figure.
Joined by comedienne Minnie Pearl, King and his Golden West Cowboys set out on the Camel Caravan. Organized by Opry sponsor the R. J.
Reynolds Company, the troupe toured military bases in the U.S. and Panama. Says Arnold of his tenure with King, "I was the master of ceremonies
for his group and I’d do a song. I was learning my trade. Of course, I wasn’t a name there at all.
"I got a lot of good experience with Pee Wee. He was a good showman. I could tell he knew how to entertain a crowd. That was very important. I’ve
always been very observant of people who were good showmen." Even today, when Arnold performs, he tries to pace his show so that he can hold his
audience’s interest. Of his recent Las Vegas shows Arnold says, "I’ll do a song like ‘That Good Old Mountain Dew’ with my banjo player. It gets the
crowd going. I do a couple of things like that to get the audience up."
During his tenure with King, Arnold landed a recording contract with RCA. But his career was put on hold due to a strike with the musician’s union.
Recalls Arnold, "There had been a recording strike. It seems to me it lasted about two years. I’d been under contract for that long but I hadn’t been
able to make a recording. I thought the world was passing me by. But as quick as that strike was over, I got a call from New York to go in the
studio."
Recalls Arnold of those December 1944 sessions, "The first two sessions I did at the radio station (WSM). I had no producer, just me and a couple
of musicians around two microphones with the engineer. We did four songs. One song was ‘Mommy Please Stay Home with Me.’"
That song failed to chart but a pair of follow-up singles for the RCA Victor label, "Each Minute Seems a Million Years" and "All Alone In This
World Without You," each managed to catch fire, and ultimately cracked Billboard’s Top Ten chart.
"I released two or three songs before I got a hit. In 1946 I did a song called ‘That’s How Much I Love You.’ It didn’t become a big hit. But it showed
life," says Arnold. The song was a near hit, though, reaching Number Two on the charts, where it stayed for four weeks.
n 1947 Arnold was on the air with his own daily 15 minute radio show for the Ralston Purina Company. "That really helped to launch me. Being on a
network, I was all over the country and it gave me exposure to a lot of people. I got fan mail from people who bought chicken feed and they had no
chickens," laughs Arnold. That same year he also scored three No. 1 singles including "I’ll Hold You In My Heart (‘Til I Can Hold You in My
Arms)." That song could easily be regarded as Arnold’s career song. In addition to topping the country charts (where it remained for 21 weeks), the
song also marked Arnold’s pop chart debut, proving that it wasn’t just country folks buying his records.
The rest of the decade was extremely fruitful for Arnold. In all he netted 21 Top Ten singles and nine No. 1 songs including, "Anytime," "Bouquet of
Roses" and "Don’t Rob Another’ Man’s Castle." As his chart success and popularity grew, so too, did Arnold’s fortunes. "I started off with a very
low royalty. I was unproven. But as quick as I started selling records, Steve Sholes and RCA raised my royalty. At the time I started, country artists
were sort of second-class citizens as opposed to the pop artists. But they had to get over that with me. At that time (Col. Tom) Parker (who would
later handle the career of Elvis Presley) was my manager and he negotiated those contracts pretty good. I finally got the same royalty as the pop
artists were getting."
Throughout the next decade and a half, Arnold proved to be a consistent presence on both the pop and country charts. In the mid-1950s, Arnold’s
career was largely unaffected by the birth of rock ‘n’ roll. He toured the U.S. and abroad extensively and appeared on a number of network variety
shows including The Spike Jones Show and Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts. Arnold also hosted his own network television show, Eddy Arnold Time,
which debuted on NBC but later moved over to ABC.
By the dawn of the 60s, Arnold added a new dimension to his career and expanded his audience even further. With more polished recordings that
often featured large orchestras, Arnold’s stock once again began to rise.
Beginning with 1965’s "What’s He Doing In My World," Arnold began another lengthy tenure at the top which included appearances at such
high-brow institutions as Washington’s Constitution Hall, Symphony Hall in Boston, and Carnegie Hall. "When I performed at Carnegie Hall it was
unbelievable. They (the people) were hanging off the walls and applauding. Doing those kinds of things was really unexpected. We did tremendous
business in those places. Doing Carnegie Hall in New York really brought on the TV show," says Arnold. (That show was the popular Kraft Music
Hall, which aired on NBC.)
In 1966 Arnold was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and was named the CMA’s first-ever Entertainer of the Year in 1967. He left
RCA in 1972. Recording for MGM, Arnold netted nine chart singles for the label before returning to RCA mid-decade. Throughout the latter half of
the 70s and into the 80s, Arnold was ever-present on the country charts, thus making him one of only a handful of artists to chart in four consecutive
decades. In 1984 the Academy of Country Music honored him with their Pioneer Award, and in 1993 RCA released a retrospective CD set, Last of
the Love Song Singers: Then & Now.
When reflecting on his career, Arnold is hard-put to single out any one personal milestone. There have been so many. Arnold prefers to look at his
career in the larger scheme of things. "All these years I have wanted country music to be respected by the average person. So many times, the
public wouldn’t really respect the music. But we all hung in and kept trying to make it respectable. It has that respect now and that’s the thing that
I’m the proudest of. It has the respect of the whole music industry and that’s what I wanted."
Arnold’s contributions to country music cannot be overstated. His ability to blur the hard line between country and pop music set the scene for
countless performers who followed.
This article on Eddy was written several years ago.....Eddy Arnold is now nearing 86 years old on May 15th,2004, and retired on May 16,1999 when
he performed for the last time at The Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas.

ON THIS DAY Jan.21st IN COUNTRY MUSIC HISTORY COLONEL TOM PARKER DIED IN 1997......Isn't it strange that they list him as Elvis
Presley's manager in "Country Music Today" ? Not that he wasn't....but another example of how they continually shun Eddy Arnold. Colonel Tom
Parker was Eddy's manager before anyone knew who Elvis was. Eddy Arnold spoke at Tom Parker's funeral when he died several years ago. Why
couldn't they list him as being both Eddy's and Elvis's manager. It just never stops....Eddy is constantly being left out and/or ignored by the press or
the T.V. media. We Eddy Arnold fans know all the great things Eddy does that go unmentioned.....what a shame.!!!!

I called the Hall Of Fame yesterday and talked to one of the people involved in "The Country Music Pop Up Book."  She said basically that with so
much material to cover they couldn't do everybody.  She then told me Eddy was in it.  To which I replied  "yes I saw picture that was marked Johnny
Horton!!  "She said that was supposed to be corrected!  "Yes there's a very small section on the Nashville sound.  But to leave Eddy out while
including Garth isn't right.  Both of these artists impact are equally important when telling the complete story.  Perhaps one day somebody will do
there homework and be as amazed as we are!!

Can anybody really do country music justice without this era of the music most of us love?  The Hall of Fame is connected with this effort.  Garth is
listed, Alan Jackson, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, but only a picture of Eddy mislabeled!!!  Why would they do such a work without this legend?  I
guess decency isn't "in vogue!"

Arnold. You may hear a hint of emotion in some other singers, but with Eddy, you can FEEL it. At least I can.
Not only has he been blessed with an incredible talent, but he's also a true gentleman and humanitarian. It seems like the entertainment industry is
fraught with scandal and indiscretion, but Eddy's always been one of the good guys. We need more like him. I challenge any artist today to even

Yes Bill!
You can tell the experience of those who chose the performers and ran the program. To say Eddy Arnold had a 25 year career is ridiculous. I do not
think anyone researched for that show.
Also, some of the picks with 10 and 12 year careers with little impact on the direction of the music, being picked before Eddy was a shame.
To pick the Eagles, that well know country music group, tells me who was choosing and the direction of country music.
I like Randy Travis but ahead of Eddy? Randy had a 10 year career and is not even singing country at this time
To completely leave off Marty Robins, George Morgan, Lefty Frizzel and Jim Reeves all together is a dis-honor to the industry.

Eddy  "The Garth Brooks of his generation.  I sure everybody would agree its the other way around Garth sales wise is "the Eddy Arnold of his
generation!!!  "They ranked him I believe number 22!!  Ernest Tubb and Roy Acuff were ranked higher!!  Certainly Ernest was a stylist but his
impact was no where near Eddy Arnold.  As for Roy Acuff he was the King Of Country in nickname only!!!  I liked his stlye but to think his impact
was more important to Eddy is laughable!!  Wonder how they decide these things?

Arnold’s contributions to country music cannot be overstated. His ability to blur the hard line between country and pop music set the scene for
countless performers who followed."
We Eddy Arnold fans can be proud that he is the foundation stone of his genre.

Hi Darlene ~   Thanks for signing the Eddy Arnold web site.    I especially liked that you choose Eddy as ONE of your favorites.  With me it's Eddy
first, and all the rest fall as they may.  In reading your post It comes across to me you think Eddy is dead.
Your last line says, To Eddy and Tammy "rest in peace''.  If I'm reading you wrong ....I apologize.  Eddy celebrated his 85th Birthday May 15....so
this coming May 15th he will be 86.  He is not in the best of health...but as Eddy says....It's passable.  Please pray that Eddy has many more
birthdays. Again on behalf of Web Master, Bill Comer....I thank you for signing guess book.
Please visit it often as it changes daily.....please tell your friends about it and encourage them to sign guest book.    Thanks....and God bless,  Don.

It's been a while since I signed on this wonderful web site for a man I admire and respect, especially after meeting him in August. Bill Comer has
done such a fantastic job of keeping us all up to date and informed. As I write 196,552 people have learned about Eddy Arnold. I'd say that was job
well done. Don Stewart has added many informative and interesting thoughts and information. It just doesn't get any better. I know, for a fact, that
Eddy and Roberta think very highly of Bill Comer, because they said so! I truly enjoy logging on and reading the remarks from people all over the
country about Dr. Arnold. It helps keep him in our thoughts.

Doris:  Many thanks for the kind remarks.  Happy New Year.  Bill Comer
