WHY I LIKE EDDY
NANCY RICHARDSON HAS SUGGESTED
WE ASK FANS TO WRITE A STATEMENT TELLING "WHY I LIKE EDDY." I THINK
IT'S AN EXCELLENT IDEA. IF YOU WILL SIGN THE GUEST BOOK AND WRITE
"WHY I LIKE EDDY" I WILL PLACE ALL THE RESPONSES INTO ONE WEBPAGE.

Subject: Why I Like Eddy
When did I first hear Eddy Arnold? I
can't remember a time when I hadn’t heard him. I guess you could
call me a member of Generation X, although I certainly don't fit that mold.
By the time I was born in 1974, Eddy was already into his “second career.”
I was born and raised in rural Middle
Tennessee, surrounded by country music and culture. Every Friday
night for as long as I can remember, I went with Mama to the local square
dances. Our radio was always tuned to AM station WSM. We watched
Ralph Emery on the TV every morning and Hee Haw every weekend. I
had a record player of my own when I was a little girl and I toted that
thing around everywhere. Once, I found a box of records and one of
them was Eddy Arnold. I wore it out, listening to “Make the World
Go Away” over and over again. It’s safe to say that I was hooked.
In the late 80’s and early 90’s, country music
experienced a sort of rebirth. People like Garth Brooks entered the
scene and turned Nashville on its ear. The sound was different… some
of it was country, but some of it wasn’t. I listened to some of the
music and I felt like a lot of the heart was gone. Country had turned
into “club music,” and it wasn’t a sound that I could identify with.
The mainstream seemed to embrace the philosophy of the new sounds.
Needless to say, I became rather disenchanted with country, believing that
it had lost sight of its roots and its soul.
A few years ago, I purchased an Eddy Arnold
cd purely for nostalgic reasons. When I listened to the music, however,
it was absolutely timeless. The emotion of Eddy’s voice and the simplistic
beauty of the arrangements were just as powerful as I imagined they were
when the songs were first cut. Believe it or not, it was refreshing
to hear someone actually SING a song rather than warble around with embellishments
or “scream on key,” like so many other “singers” do these days. I
felt like I had come home to an old familiar friend.
I tried to find out more about Eddy Arnold,
who had been nothing more than just a familiar voice to me up until then.
I was amazed to find no dirt on this man. How shocking! I had
been so blinded by “the industry” to think that a person had to have a
tainted past to be a country superstar. We’ve idolized so many who
drank themselves to death, been in jail, married 6 or 7 times, or slept
with everyone on Music Row that I had almost believed that you had to misbehave
to get respected. Yet, here was this man who had not only risen to
the top but also helped (and continues to help) others along the way!
How wonderful!
I turned back to the music. There are
some artists who show emotion through the voice, and then there’s Eddy.
I do like how Webb Pierce bends the first notes of “There Stands The Glass.”
I also like Randy Gentry’s whisper-like ending to Alabama’s “In Pictures.”
I could sit and listen to Riders In The Sky’s Ranger Doug (Idol of American
Youth) yodel for hours on end. But Eddy’s got ‘em all beat.
Vern Gosden has been called “The Voice.” He is good, I will concede
that. His “Chiseled In Stone” is a moving song. But wait until
you’ve heard Eddy sing “Nobody’s Darlin’ But Mine,” which is my all-time
favorite Eddy Arnold song. You can FEEL the begging and pleading
in his voice (especially when he sings “Promise me that you will never/Be
nobody’s darlin’ but mine”). It absolutely reaches down inside you
to the point that you are ready to fall down on your OWN knees!
And he does it all without screaming or growling, or warbling and embellishing
the notes. He sings it straight, and lets the song tell the story.
All you hear is the music… and pure emotion. Eddy is THE VOICE in
my book.
I have remained an Eddy Arnold fan, even though
other people my age have said, “Eddy who?” I was once talking to
someone and the song “The Tip of My Fingers” came up. They recalled
that Steve Wariner had recorded it. I said something to the effect
of, “you ain’t heard nothing yet” and played Eddy Arnold’s cut of the song.
Add one more fan to the list! I’ve surprised several people that
way, and they always end up asking for more. Timeless – that’s Eddy’s
music.
Then, I stumbled upon Bill Comer’s website.
What an extensive amount of information. Not just statistics or lists
of awards, but personal stories and insight into Eddy Arnold the singer
and Eddy Arnold the man. Bill has done more than just create a tribute,
he’s shown to the world that Eddy is a kind and decent man who, unlike
many other music celebrities, has never “got above his raising,” as we’d
say in Tennessee. Eddy’s never forgotten where he came from or who
he is. A humble man, he treats everyone with the same kindness and
respect. He doesn’t put on airs or pretend to be something he’s not.
Believe me, just as it shows in his personal and public life, it also shows
in his music. I think that’s one of the main things that endears
him to so many people around the world.
Sadly, I’ve never had the privilege to see
Eddy in concert, and I’ve never been so fortunate as to meet him in person.
It’s a wonder, though. I live very close to the homes of several
country stars and have “bumped into” them on occasion in places like the
grocery store. Out here, it’s understood that they just want to be
left alone, so whenever I’ve seen somebody famous, I don’t say anything,
except maybe ‘hi’ in passing.
I find it rather odd that Eddy has been slighted
recognition as of late. It’s sad, but sometimes that’s how it is.
If it were up to me, I’d give him every possible award out there.
I think, though, that the awards are just “gravy” to Eddy, anyhow.
I imagine that he’d still have done things exactly the same, even if there
were no awards to be won. The best thing that we can do is to show
him directly that we love him and that we think he’s great, right?
It is a given that Eddy Arnold is not only a country icon but a standard
for singers of all genres. People who enjoy any type of music can
listen to Eddy for inspiration as to “here’s how you sing it from the heart.”
And long after the trophies are left on a shelf to collect dust, long after
the cameras stop flashing and the red carpets are rolled away, there will
still be the music, left for us to share with generations to come.
Oh, and there are two other fans you need
to add to the list – my two young sons. They’re not even in school
yet and they already sing “Cattle Call” with their Mama.
Keep singing a song, Eddy. We’re listening.

Subject: EDDY ARNOLD.........
Hello to all you Eddy Arnold fans. I hope
you will hang in here with me for a few minutes. This is the first time
that I have done this. So I'm giving it my best shot....
Eddy Arnold?? Need I say more?? How about
awesome or smooth or better yet how about just a wonderfully talented man??
Awesome.. is how I feel about Eddy Arnold!!
I was bought up with country music and Eddy
Arnold is one of the ones that I remember the most from my younger days.
Tho I was young and didn't really understand the words Eddy was singing
but I knew that I liked his music. As years went by and I "grew up" country
music sort of took a back seat in my life but yet it was still engraved
in my mind. You know, country music just wasn't "cool" in my younger years.
As the years went by and I "grew up" a little
more, country music was back in my life once again. I can honestly say
that Eddy wasn't one of my favorites until I heard "Bouquet of Roses".
For some reason that song has just really stuck with me. Today it is still
one of my favorites that Eddy sings.
Then when I really "grew up", being a single
parent, kids gone... a thing called a computer entered my life. Oh, I am
really uptown now!! As I ventured into my computer I discovered the chat
rooms. What was more astounding to me was that people were playing music!
Most of what I heard was country music. As I sat back listening, I noticed
that the people were all taking turns playing the music of their choice.
I wasn't really paying too much attention to who was playing or singing
what. Then I heard someone sing a song that I had not heard in years. That
song was "Cattle Call" by none other than the man himself.... Eddy Arnold.
What
really surprised me was the person that was singing the song. No, it wasn't
Eddy Arnold but a person who has become a very dear friend of mine and
who has helped me get to know more about Eddy than I knew. That person
is my dear friend Don Stewart.
After hearing Don sing several more of Eddy's
songs we got to chatting and became friends. Don has told me so much about
Eddy and directed me to Eddy's website. I must admit that I have never
been to many websites before. What an impression that visit has left on
me. I never knew that Eddy had and has such devoted fans. They all speak
so highly of him and now I can understand why. Eddy has one of the smoothest
voices that I have ever heard, the kind that makes you want to hear more.
As I have said ... just awesome!!!
One often wonders if people like Eddy are
really "real".. well I for one have learned that he is very real! He is
such a caring, life loving person and he has feelings the same as you and
I. He sings of life's ups and downs and songs that a person like me can
relate to. I have heard so many of Eddy's songs and ones that I haven't
heard before. I'm sure they have been on the radio and such, but
they are new to me. With a voice like Eddy has I don't understand why his
music isn't given more air time. Its true the younger generation is climbing
up the ladder but you have the "older" generation that still loves to hear
the sounds of Eddy Arnold, I know I do and I really don't think I am that
old!! After all its just a number... right??
One more thing I don't understand is why Eddy
has not received the recognition that he is so deserving of. He has worked
long and hard to get where he is today. He has had one hit after another
and he keeps plucking away and comes back with yet another hit.
I realize that Eddy has so many devoted fans
but the ones most important to him are his family... for they are always
there to give him love and encouragement and to stand by their "man".
In closing I would like to thank Bill Comer
for the great website. It takes a lot of devotion to keep such a site so
up to date. My hats off to you Bill. Thanks.....
Again I would also like to thank Don for showing
me the side of Eddy that I didn't know and for introducing me to Eddy's
website. I will continue to visit the site often.....
A new fan.....

Subject: Why I LOVE Eddy.....
Hi,
I would like to begin by saying I don't just
"like" Eddy...I love this man. He has always been one of my very
favorite people of the entertainment industry. I am 49 years old
and have been in love with Eddy and his beautiful voice as long as I can
remember. I was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama and
I remember as a young teen....not sure of the year...but when I was young,
Eddy's son was involved in a terrible automobile accident somewhere close
to Bessemer, Alabama....and I remember how Eddy was there by his son's
side for a very long time. Deep inside I was just a young girl infatuated
with Eddy...I was hoping I would see him while he was there. I know
it was a bad time for Eddy and his family but of course being a young girl
..my heart went out to them but still I wanted to catch a glimpse of Eddy.
I was recently married to a wonderful man
that loves music as much as myself...and guess what? We were married
in Bessemer, Alabama which brought back all my memories of Eddy...I have
not lived in Alabama in over 20 years but my family still lives there and
that's where I went back to be married just 2 weeks ago. I told my
new husband that I had to be honest with him...that I was in love with
another man...and that man was the most wonderful, loving caring man and
could sing as beautiful as the birds...when I told him it was Eddy I loved...he
just laughed and said...it was ok...he wasn't jealous...pssst...(I think
he really is, just won't admit it)...Laffin here...
I have told him my secret adoration's for
Eddy...now its all in the open....<smiling> I sure hope Eddy's
wife won't mind...
I have told my husband, that if I ever got
the chance to meet "ANYONE" in the entertainment business...I would not
have to think ...I already know the answer to that...it would be Eddy...but
I bet, I would be tooooo shy to say anything....probably just "faint"!!!!...
I have never heard anything but good things
about Eddy...he is one of the most genuine people I have ever followed...I
will never forget one night on national television...I think it was during
a country music awards show...when he was called to accept an award...I
cried right along with him ...his tears were genuine and he was so appreciative...it
touched my heart and I will never forget that acceptance...if I never get
to have the honor of meeting him here on earth...I know if I am good enough
to enter the gates of heaven I will meet Eddy there...cause I know he will
be there entertaining all the angels with his beautiful, smooth voice...a
gift from God for sure...a gift very rare and true...there will never ever
be another Eddy and I thank you for allowing me to tell someone other than
my new husband how much I love this man...<smiling>
Debbie McMahon
PS...Eddy, if I ever get the honor of meeting
you...we gonna give your wife advance warning...I will kiss you on your
cheek, and I want a picture to keep forever!!!!!!!
PS again...to my husband...Honey, you know
I love you with all my heart...but I hope you understand I love Eddy too...<big
smile>

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
I like Eddy because in 1956 I was working
an air shift at KOBY, San Francisco, when Eddy walked in. He had
a new release and we were the hottest station in the Bay area. I was fairly
new to radio and was a little nervous interviewing such a great artist.
He was the most relaxed man I had ever met and put me at ease right away.
I told him that when I started in radio at a small town in Colorado, his
show "Eddy Arnold's Checkerboard Square Show" was on during my air shift.
The format included his signature, a commercial, and then any song of his
that I chose to play. I loved doing that show.
Over the years I have worked at several radio
stations in several capacities from radio personality, program director, and
manager. Whatever my capacity I always included an Eddy Arnold song.
I have always remembered him for his grace
and kindness and have always respected his talent. For many years
he always sent me a Christmas card and I want to thank him for his thoughfulness.
Best regards to a great guy and one of America's
great singers and personalities.

WHY I LIKE EDDY !
BACK IN 1982, I TRAVELLED TO
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE TO TRY TO GET A BREAK INTO THE COUNTRY MUSIC FIELD
AS A SINGER/ SONGWRITER FROM SANDPOINT, IDAHO. I GOT TO NASHVILLE
WITH $500.00 DOLLARS IN MY POCKET, A REEL-TO-REEL TAPE RECORDER, AND A
DOZEN OF MY BEST SONGS TO DATE. I KNOCKED ON DOORS, DROPPED
OFF TAPES, WENT TO SEMINARS, AND JAMMED WITH OTHER PERFORMERS TRYING TO
BE THE NEXT ONE TO BE NOTICED. I FOUND NASHVILLE TO BE VERY
DAUNTING AND AN ATTITUDE BY MANY NEW ARRIVALS THAT "IF YOU'RE NOT SOMEBODY
THAT CAN HELP ME, YOU'RE NOT WORTH MY TIME" WAS THE GENERAL IMPRESSION
RECEIVED BY MANY.
WHILE IN NASHVILLE, I JOINED
THE NASHVILLE SONGWRITERS ASSOCIATION, NSAI, AS A LIFETIME MEMBER AND BEGAN
ATTENDING THEIR FREE WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS. WHILE THERE, I MET A
REALTOR WHO WENT BY THE NAME 'JAMES WEST' WHO WAS TRYING TO LEARN TO WRITE
SONGS. HE WAS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO HELP HIM OUT, SHARE IDEAS, AND CUT
SOME DEMOS. I WAS GLAD TO HELP OUT ALL I COULD.
A FEW MONTHS LATER, JIM CALLED
ME AND ASKED IF I WOULD LIKE TO GO FOR A RIDE. I SAID "SURE, WHERE
TO?" HE SAID "IT'S A SURPRISE!" AND WHAT A SURPRISE!
WE ARRIVED OUTSIDE OF A SMALL
BUSINESS IN NASHVILLE. JIM TOOK ME INSIDE AND WENT TOWARD THE BACK.
NO SIGNS, NO INDICATION OF WHOSE OFFICES WERE IN THE BACK. ALL OF
A SUDDEN I WAS STANDING IN THE ROOM WITH EDDY'S SECRETARY AND BEING TOLD
EDDY WAS EXPECTING US!
I WAS SO EXCITED TO MEET THE
MAN I HAD GROWN UP LISTENING TO ALL MY LIFE, A MAN WHOSE STYLE DEEPLY INFLUENCE
MY OWN STYLE. WHEN WE MET MR. ARNOLD HE MADE ME FEEL TOTALLY COMFORTABLE
AND AT EASE IN HIS OFFICE. HE ASKED ABOUT MY LIFE AND WHAT I WAS
DOING IN NASHVILLE. WHEN I TOLD HIM THAT I CAME TO LEARN THE BUSINESS
AND THAT I WRITE AND SING, HE ASKED IF I HAD A TAPE OF MY SONGS.
ALL I COULD SAY WAS " I JUST CAME TO MEET YOU AND AM SO HONORED TO BE HERE
I COULDN'T ASK YOU THE FAVOR OF LISTENING TO MY SONGS, IT WOULDN'T
BE PROPER." HE INSISTED I GET MY TAPE SO I DID. (I WAS PRETTY SHY
ABOUT PUSHING MYSELF, WHICH IS PROBABLY WHY I'M NOT A STAR TODAY, BUT HE
WAS SO GRATIOUS I COULDN'T RESIST.)
EDDY LISTED TO EVERY SONG ON
MY TAPE AND THEN PICKED UP THE PHONE AND CALLED "BOB JENNINGS" AT ACUFF-ROSE.
HE SAID "I'VE GOT A YOUNG MAN HERE I'D LIKE YOU TO WORK WITH." AND
MY HEART WAS FILLED WITH SO MUCH APPRECIATION, I COULDN'T HARDLY SPEAK.
HERE WAS A MAN, A LEGEND IN COUNTRY MUSIC, WILLING TO HELP THIS SMALL TOWN
BOY GET A BREAK AND I'LL NEVER FORGET HIM FOR THAT. WE TALKED ALOT
AND HE GAVE ME ADVICE THAT I USE EVERYDAY IN COMPOSING MY SONGS.
SHORTLY AFTER THIS VISIT, I
HAD TO MAKE A TRIP TO FLORIDA, AND WHEN I RETURNED, I FOUND OUT THAT BOB
JENNINGS HAD DIED. I STOPPED BY EDDY'S OFFICE AND DROPPED OFF A TAPE
I HAD WRITTEN CALLED "IN MEMORY" WITH HIS SECRETARY. I TOLD HER THIS
SONG WAS NOT FOR HIS CONSIDERATION AS A SONG I WANTED TO RECORD, BUT A
SONG I FELT COULD HELP DURING THIS TIME OF LOSS OF SUCH A CLOSE FRIEND.
SHE SAID, "YOU KNOW I WAS A FRIEND OF BOB'S TOO." AND STARTED TO CRY.
I ASKED HER TO TAKE THE SONG IN TO MR. ARNOLD AND FOR BOTH OF THEM TO LISTEN
TO IT, THEN I LEFT.
I NEVER WAS ABLE TO RETURN TO
HIS OFFICE AGAIN, AS I FELT I MAY INTRUDE AND I COULDN'T ASK FAVORS OF
THIS GREAT MAN AND HIS WONDERFUL SECRETARY AT THEIR TIME OF GRIEF.
SHORTLY AFTERWARD, I RETURNED HOME AS MY FATHER HAD PASSED AWAY AND NEVER
RETURNED.
TO THIS DAY, I STILL THINK OF
THE DOWN HOME FEELINGS AND THE GRACIOUS ACCEPTANCE AND HOSPITALITY THESE
THREE PEOPLE SHOWED ME. (JAMES WEST, EDDY ARNOLD, AND ROBERTA)
I CAN EASILY SEE WHY THEIR LIVES ARE BLESSED.
I ALSO LEARNED SOMETHING VERY
VALUABLE ABOUT NASHVILLE: YOU NEVER KNOW WHO COULD BE THE ONE WHO HELPS
YOU OPEN DOORS. IT MIGHT EVEN BE "JUST" A REALTOR.

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
Why do I like Eddy? His warm voice has a pure
wholesomeness, as if he could just as easily be singing
while sitting on my back porch. His interpretation
of the writer's words say things in a way that touches me.
He has an eloquence that makes one wish that
they could say things that well.
I became a fan in the late 1960s, ( I am 41
years old now) when the folks purchased an RCA Camden release that had
a song called "Do You Miss ME". Then came the advent of 8 track tape players
in the family automobile. A record club had a tape with BOTH "My World"
and "Turn the World Around" albums on it. I must have worn that tape out
on the vacation trips from New York to Maine every summer. I certainly
must have driven my folks crazy, for while they liked Eddy too, I'm not
sure 7 hours straight was their idea of fun. As time went on, I would hear
new songs on the radio, and go out and buy the record. On the back of one
such record were pictures of other Eddy Arnold releases, Dozens!! Right
then, I began a quest to own every album that Eddy had done. That quest
was completed a number of years ago, all the old recordings were mine,
now to just pick up the new stuff as it came out.
I cannot say anything new about the class
and dignity of the man. Others have already said that so well.
I will say that he has always taken the time
to answer my letters and birthday cards. He was also very gracious when
I got to meet him after two of his personal appearances in 1987, and again
in 1993. I've rambled on enough. Now just to mention the title of my favorite
Eddy Arnold song: "Here Comes Heaven", "If It's Alright With You"; "Mary
in The Morning", "If You Were Mine, Mary"; "I Love How You Love Me"; "As
Usual"; "At Sunset"; "You Stand At Every Crossroad"; "She Makes My Roses
Grow"; "Snowfall"; "I Wish That I Had Loved You Better"; "Make The World
Go Away"; "Castle Made of Walls"; "I've Got This Thing About You"; "I'd
Prefer To Do It All Again";............

The Ambassador Of Country Music
By Don Stewart
WHY I LIKE EDDY!
We were all asked to write why we like Eddy
Arnold. What isn't there to like about this legend in MUSIC?.
I say music, and not Country music only, because Eddy had many a cross
over hit in his long outstanding career. He himself states, he wants
to be referred to as just a singer...not country....not pop...just a singer.
Well he certainly has been that for more than 60 years..as he really started
singing for a few dollars when he was about 17 - 18 years old. He
came from a large and poor family..and a humble beginning.
His Mother was musically inclined and helped Eddy to play the guitar.
He was to poor to buy a guitar, so he borrowed
his cousins Silvertone guitar purchased from Sears Roebuck Co. catalog.
Eddy soon picked up on several cords, and began his playing and singing.
Later in his young life he took a few lessons on the guitar. He didn't
need voice lessons ....as that came naturally. But after a few lessons
...he learned the names of the cords he had already learned to play himself.
But he didn't know what he was playing....until those few lessons taught
him the names of the cords he was already playing. But life wasn't
easy for Eddy as a young boy...his Father died on Eddy's 11th birthday.
They couldn't keep the payments on a loan...and
lost their family farm. So they became sharecroppers
on their own farm. Eddy needed to plow the fields on his once
owned family farm...and at times other peoples farm to earn a few dollars.
So life didn't come easy for Eddy, as he needed to drop out of school to
help on the farm...but he never gave up pursuing his dream. He started
singing at Church socials and Fish fries....anything, as Eddy put it to
earn a quarter. Later on... singing in a tent show with Minnie Pearl...Jamup
and Honey [ black face duo] Speedy and Uncle Dave Macon. The front
man for this show was soon to be his manager Col. Tom Parker.
Of course he had a great career with Col.
Tom Parker...who later managed Elvis. While doing these tent shows
...Eddy was also appearing on the Opry. This soon became to
much for Eddy. As no matter where in the country they were....they
were obligated to return for a Saturday night appearance on the Opry.
Soon Eddy left the Opry for this.... and one other reason. The Opry
wanted 15 % of his booking....just to announce them on the radio.
So they stopped announcing them on the WSM Grand Ole Opry Show !!!
Because of this 15% to announce your bookings.
Eddy and Col. Tom Parker...soon parted and
...it wasn't long before Eddy quit the Opry. They asked Eddy,
"Eddy how could you do that...the Opry made You !!? Eddy's reply
was ....That's right. But if it made Me.....why didn't it make
the "Fruit Jar Drinkers" [an old fiddle group]? In other words .....who
ever heard of them? So as well as the Opry helped make Eddy....Eddy
sure helped make the Opry. This is the main reason why I feel Eddy
is being overlooked and shunned in so many ways. It is one
thing to be overlooked once or twice...but not every time.
Eddy soon hooked up with Pee Wee King...and had a great start.
But he soon left Pee Wee ..as his main goal was to sing solo. The
rest is history...knocking out 92 top ten hits in his long career....with
28 of these ending in the number one spot. Once having
6 in the ten top at the same time.. To have recorded 1,107
songs is just amazing. At the height of his career in 1971 his son
had a very bad car accident....that almost took his only sons life.
Eddy put his career on hold... and took care of his badly injured son.
This meant carrying him from one room to another
to bathe him. Putting pillows at the bottom of one of those
old galvanized bath tubs. It took a long time for him to recover
from this accident. When he felt he could take gigs close to
home as his son improved ...he did. On one of those occasions....his
wife Sally called him and told him to listen to your Son!!.
He spoke his first word since the accident......"Daddy"....Eddy broke down
in tears ...saying that was the greatest sound he ever heard. This
was the start of a long road back of teaching his son Dickie...to walk...and
talk again. Walter Scott, you need to meet Eddy and his son....I
feel I was blessed in my lifetime in meeting this wonderful man.
Getting back to Eddy's career .....Pee Wee
hated to see him leave....but wished him well. They remained
friends till Pee Wee died in 2000. Even Col. Tom Parker and
Eddy remained friends till his death a few years ago. Eddy
even spoke at Tom's funeral...and remained friends till his death.
Some one once stated, that a hand shake with Eddy is worth more than a
written contract. I can't begin to believe what I am
reading in the July 21, 2000 issue of Parade Magazine. Where they
wrote about who the "Top 10 Greatest Living Country Singers were"
It was written by Walter Scott...who must live in a bubble...or on some
remote island. He lists George Jones as the best...and names
9 others...but Eddy isn't included on this list.
You can view this list by looking at article
on main page. As others have said, these artist are worth mentioning...but
to leave Eddy completely out is down right discussing. Ask your average
30 or... even forty year old who Eddy Arnold is....and they reply....Eddy
who? These are the same people who are writing these
articles for magazines such as the current issue of Parade Magazine.
But then ask Michael Anthony.... who is a disk jockey from a N.Y.C. Radio
Station WHPC, who is in his 30's. Bill Comer Webmaster
of this site set up an interview with he and Eddy. Here
is a young announcer who did his homework and is an Eddy Arnold fan.
I have heard this interview with him and Eddy...and it is GREAT.
Michael makes mention ....here is a Super
Star almost 3 times my senior saying yes Sir, to me. This truly shows
what type of man Eddy truly is. Most Stars wouldn't even bother
to be interviewed...but it was well worth the interview...just to hear
Eddy laugh. We as a "Committee" with Frank Cunningham, Nancy Richardson,
Bill Shoop, and Bill Comer...have contacted many important people.
To try to get Eddy nominated for the Kennedy Art Center award.
Such people as Congressmen, Senators Mayors...T.V. and Radio personalities,
book Authors...and this list is endless. I even wrote to Shirley
Sheppard....who is a singer / song writer who has sold her songs, into
the millions.
Besides this ...she is Publisher/Editor of
Fla. Country Music News. In one week, 5 of the top 10
songs in the Nation were her creation. Yet she took the time to answer
my email to her... requesting Zeke Thomas email. They are all part
of.. TIAC RADIO. In turn Zeke answered our "Committee" with
and endorsement. We sure want to take the time to thank Ralph
Emery of "Nashville Now" and TNN fame, and author of several books.
For sending in his endorsement for Eddy to be nominated for this award.
His latest book 50 Years Down A Country Road....is dedicated to Eddy Arnold.
I bought the book, and I'm reading it now. On the third
blank page its written........... "To Eddy Arnold...Country music's first
superstar". Think I will send Ralph an Email requesting he
send Walter Scott of Parade Magazine a copy of this book.
I wonder If this guy ever heard of Jeannie
& Bill Walker....who played background music for Eddy.
As Bill's orchestra played ,Jeannie sang back up for Eddy.. she was impressed
with his kindness and sincerity. As she watch from the wings she was captivated
by Eddy's voice, stage presence, and audience appeal.
This is the same Bill Walker who recently finished a 7 year stint backing
up the Statler Brothers. Do I dare mention the most famous
vocal back up group...The Anita Kerr singer's?....who were Eddy's background
singers. Not the other way around..... this is not to say they couldn't
make it on there own.
Just to mention a few more names for this
Walter Scott of Parade Magazine. I saw Eddy In concert 5 times....with
George Gobel, Boots Randolph, The Lennon Sisters, and the Jordanaires.
All these great stars were opening up acts for Eddy. If that's not
ringing any bells for Mr. Scott.....how about the 42 sessions {126 songs}
Floyd Cramer played background piano for Eddy. Also the 86 sessions Chet
Atkins backed Eddy .....I'm sorry I didn't count how many songs there were
in these sessions...as there were so many. Plus many of these
sessions included Chet on the guitar...and Floyd on the piano at the same
time. Pretty impressive to say the least.
Eddy and his lovely wife Sally.... will be
celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary this Nov 28th.
He retired from performing in May of 1999...after charting in 5 decades.
After he retired.... up and coming Star, 14 yr. old Lee Ann Rimes....just
signed a contract with Mike Curb of Curb records. She had all
ready had a huge hit with "Blue"....but she wanted to sing Cattle Call....Eddys
signature song. Mike Curb was a good friend of Eddys....and
asked Lee Ann...if she would like to sing a duet with the man that did
the earlier version. She agreed....and Mike called Eddy....and
Eddy agreed to sing it with her. I hope you noticed... she
didn't ask to sing with one of the 10 best Country Artist named on Walter
Scotts list.
They recorded it, and it soon charted at the
end of 1999 making 6 decades he charted in....it carried over breifly
into 2000. Making him the only artist to chart in 7 straight
decades. A remarkable feat to say the least. It
is coming close to the Kennedy Art Center nominating time.
In Ralph Emery's book he talks about many country stars....and their jaded
past. It is a known fact Hank Williams was a heavy drinker.....as
was another one of Walter Scotts 10 top picks...the late Patsy Cline.
I love her singing...she had a great voice. But I can
think of no one who deserves the Kennedy Art Center nomination more than
Eddy Arnold. He wasn't a booser....happily married for almost
61 years....and a great family man. Upon retiring he said "I
want to give the remaining years I have left....to my lovely Wife....she
has spent many, many, years with me on the road. Eddy
is a very wealthy man...but values the love of his devoted fans.
Every Eddy Arnold fan has him on the top of their list...... are you listening...Mr.
Scott. God bless You Eddy, and you lovely wife Sally.
Good luck....they can't ignore you for ever....we Eddy fans won't let them.
Don Stewart.

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
I have been a fan of Eddy Arnold since I first
heard him sing his then trademark song "Cattle Call" back in the
40's. In the 60's I bought every record he made and they were all great
hits outselling even Frank Senatra (in my neck of the woods) and I still
buy anything he has in the music stores. I have read and watched
Eddy in countless interviews and there has never been a more gracious and
modest man. I remember in particular on one occasion when he was being
given a great honor on television and his words (with tears in his eyes)
were "all I ever wanted to do was sing. " That is what Eddy is all
about---a man with a beautiful voice and a love of the songs he sings to
make people happy. I love Eddy Arnold !

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
Hello Bill Comer,
I don't know exactly what to say or where
to start. The word WHY is so vast. I like the sound of his voice. I like
what he says and sings. I like the way he sings. Frank Sinatra had nothing
on Eddy in his approach to music and phrasing.
I started listening to Eddy on the radio at
lunchtime in 1947, when I would come home from school. His program was
sponsored by Purina Mills. I remember the Lightfoot Doughboys from Burris
Mills. It must have been a 15 minute program. He belonged to me after
that.
My mother and I met Eddy at the Coconut Grove
in October 1967. We attended all the concerts. You just can't miss one.
Wonderful experience. I have collected, over the years, more than 40 record
albums including some 78's, along with the box set, My Mother, that was
recorded in the '40's.
What else can I say about the Tennessee Plowboy?
A wonderful person, singer and entertainer. I remember him being called
the Country Como, which was a very nice compliment.
Over the years he has made quite an impression
on the music world. I wish him good health and happiness in his retirement
years. He will just have to get accustomed to being praised. All he ever
wanted, was to sing.
Thank you for listening,
Florence Forrester-Stockton

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
My computer had a glitch so I don't know if
I signed the guest book..anyway...like someone said, " nobody don't like
Eddy Arnold" A nice, kind, caring gentleman and one of God's gift to us
as a wonderful singer. Sit around some picker and singers for a few minutes...someone
will come up with "Roses", " Cattle Call", "Molly"..etc...you name it.
I guess there are some good singers around in the new country..I hear only
a few...but they will NEVER! come up to Eddy Arnold's level, in my opinion.
May our Lord bless you Eddy,
Love, Jack Hall

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
Through his music, Eddy Arnold has been a
friend of my for many years. In all the ups and downs of life, Eddy
has always had a song the fit the occasion. He has helped me cope
with difficult times and celebrate the good times. I love the way
Eddy Arnold sings a song. His voice strikes a cord in my heart. Though
I do not know him personally, his voice reflects a warmth of personality
and genuine goodness which connects with my soul. He sings from the
heart and is able to communicate real feelings of happiness or sadness
and thus touch my feelings of the same. In addition, I also hear,
in his singing a genuine humility which cannot be fabricated. One
either has it or doesn't have it. Eddy has it, because I believe
it is real. Eddy Arnold continues to be my friend through his music.
I applaud his success. He has earned it the right way and handled
it with class. I am proudly an Eddy Arnold fan and always will be.

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
That is a hard question to answer. Having
been a die hard fan of his for 57 years now and being raised in a musical
environment; its like trying to say which you love better, the sun coming
up or the sun going down on a misty valley. Mr. Arnold is truly the most
accomplished performer in his profession and all his awards attest to that;
the love and happiness he has shared with all his millions of fans over
all the years are truly remarkable. He has set a Standard of what a vast
majority of entertainers could only dream of; to gauge themselves by. I
remember Mr. Arnold as a child in the mid-40s in Atlanta and he was just
as nice and kind then as he is now. I have known a lots of Country Performers
and I've never heard not one say a 'Bad word about Eddy Arnold'. I have
never sent Mr. Arnold a Birthday card or a Christmas card; that I didn't
later on; get a 'Thank You Note' from him for Remembering him. Now Friends
that's [Loyalty To Your Fans] If I had to sum it up!
shortly why 'I like Eddy Arnold' "He's a First
Class Man that was raised right and never forgot where he came from and
how he got there" God Bless Eddy Arnold, Sincerely: Jerry Vandiver

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
When the Lord gave out beautiful voices he
had some left over, he decided if he gave it to the little Tennessee farm
boy named Eddy Arnold that he would use it to make people happy, which
is exactly what he did. Eddy truly has one of the finest voices of
our time and his singing has brought joy to many people worldwide. Eddy
has worked hard to please his fans and their strong loyalty proves it.
I like Eddy not only for his wonderful voice, also because fame has never
gone to his head. He remains a warm, humble man with a great sense
of humor, and morals that make him a fine role model for all ages.

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
Why I like Eddy is not an easy question to
answer for there are so many reasons. The man has the ability to
bring a tear to my eye or a smile to my face depending on the song he is
singing. He has a voice like no one else in this world, so sincere, so
beautiful and so clear. Many singers have impersonated other stars
but I have never heard anyone try to do Eddy and the simple reason is they
can't. He is unique and simply can't be copied. I love love songs and the
one person in this world that sings them the way I like them is Eddy Arnold
which is one of the many reasons why I like Eddy. Furthermore having
seen many of his performances I come to realize that he is one of the most
polished entertainers in the business, humble but always in command of
his music and the audiences. Eddy Arnold is a fine human being who
appreciates his roots, where he come from, how he got to where he is now
and all the fans who have enjoyed his music all these years.

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
Well, here are the reason why I really and
truly love the man and his music so much. I first started listening to
him when I was only 12 years old and from then on, I have been hooked.
The very first song I ever heard him do was Make The World Go Away and
oh, I immediately fell in love with that great great voice that nobody
else could possibly match. I think Eddy is truly one of country music's
most greatest artists in the world and I am only a 17 year old blind boy.
It is unusual for someone my age to appreciate this wonderful talent of
Mr. Arnold and no other country artist has charted 145 singles. He is truly
a wonderful man and in my opinion, his music will never die out. It will
always live on and on forever and I thank the lord each day that I have
been a fan of Eddy for almost 4 years.
Most sincerely yours, Maheen.

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
I believe my wife best summed up why I like
Eddy. My wife recently summed up Eddy Arnold as a person while listening
to him sing, "I've So Much To Be Thankful For." She said, "This song
really tells his fans the truth about his humility, his kindness and his
love for his fellow human beings."

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
I can remember listening to the radio when
a teenager, some fifty years ago. The one song that stands out was
"Bouquet of Roses" by Eddy Arnold. My older sister even bought the
record and sheet music. My family would stand around the piano and
sing all the country western songs. As I grew older and away from
the home, I lost touch with all that kind of music. In 1965 I was
in New Jersey, Asbury Park, and went to see Eddy Arnold in concert.
I heard "Make The World Go Away", and was thrilled. Now that I have
retired for the third time, I have a CD player in my car and the first
CD I found was Eddy Arnold. I now have 18 of them. From the
Bill Comer web site I discovered more about DR. Arnold and feel he is the
epitome of his kind of music. I also learned how he has become, like
so many great Americans, a man that had a dream, and fulfilled it.
He started out from a poor, but honorable family, and KEPT his integrity
and excellent values even though he became rich and!
famous. Not many of our newer stars
can truly say this. He has shown consideration and love of his fellow
man, and still succeeded. He deserves any and all awards available.

WHY I LIKE EDDY!
I became a fan of Eddy Arnold when I was a
kid and heard him sing "Bouquet of Roses" in 1948. Since that time
I followed his career and later when I married my wife, she became a fan
and all of our four children were raised listening to Eddy Arnold's music.
I can proudly say that all of my seven grandchildren also love Eddy Arnold's
music. Eddy Arnold is the greatest singer and performer in the world.
Eddy is considerate of his fans, he appreciates them, he is devoted to
them and he is simply a good and kind individual. In summary, I love
the man and his music.
