The cold september sky
by
edwin blake brietz
with the wind riding high
i kissed her and said goodbye
fairwell to my southern girl
she never knew she was my world
with my cross,my gun,a rose and a knife
i went off to join the fight
it was september..the sky was blue
to hold my feelings back was all i could do
i kissed her and said goodbye
neath the cold september sky
the union was advancing quickly..so i best be on my way
and as i went to join the rebels
i wonderered if i'd see her again some day
she never would ever see me again, but
this she didnt know...for if i would have known the future
i would have told her so
i died for my country..in a war not long forgot
and it made this countrys history whether we remember it or not
this nation...divided against itself...did the only thing it could do
.......under the cold september sky....overcast and gray...i took a wound that overcame me
then i went on my way..
but i hope she thinks about me...i wonder what could have been
for we never know ,when well see the end
.....i said goodbye to my gal...under the cold september sky
