"As a major player in the revolution of the song as a foundation for social progress, Woody Guthrie has been a storehouse of inspiration for folksingers and songwriters for over five decades. The esoteric (but worthwhile) Smithsonian Folkways label, not surprisingly the most important archivist of Guthrie material, has done a fine job of keeping Guthrie’s torch lit across generations, as did Moses "Moe" Asch, one of America’s foremost musicologists and one of Guthrie’s earliest believers.
Asch and Guthrie’s The Asch Recordings, Vol. 3 is the third in a series featuring rare and heretofore unrecorded material written by Guthrie and recorded by Asch, transferred from fragile acetates and masters to CD. The sound quality here is as good as can be expected, though it won’t impress friends on your boss stereo system. Though Guthrie is well-represented on disc these days, Hard Travelin’, well-annotated with 27 songs and 75 minutes of music, earns high marks in the growing recorded history of one of our best-loved folk music anarchists."
