According to the Winfield apocrypha (otherwise known as recollections of the Winfield-l mailing list members), this event came about because Tom Chapin sent a letter to the festival organizers that said something like he enjoyed Winfield so much he'd like to be buried on Stage 3. Legend has it that the next year the emcee on Stage III quoted (possibly fictional) letters Tom had sent to every other festival's organizers saying much the same thing, and invited some of Tom's peers to the stage to help "bury him."
It really doesn't matter which parts of the story are true, since it is a good one and, as usual, everybody had a good time.
